Fortuna, California: Mighty Redwoods and Foodie Diversions

After being settled in the late 19th century, Fortuna was supposedly given its Spanish name because its residents felt so fortunate to be living near forests, the river valley, and the Pacific Ocean. A good marketing gimmick, to be sure, but the scenery is something to behold. The highlight of the landscape has to be the mighty redwood trees, which you can see along Highway 101 on a drive to the Avenue of the Giants, a 31-mile stretch of highway lined with redwood groves in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Here, you can hike, bike, swim, and fish near the famous ancient trees.

There’s lots to do in Fortuna, too—check out Clendenen’s Cider Works, an old-fashioned cider mill with tastings and a press that’s been in operation since 1916. The Loleta Cheese Factory offers tours so you can see the process as it moves from cows to cheese and tasty samples. Fortuna’s walkable downtown has upscale shops, galleries, and restaurants to wander through on a sunny afternoon.

This was a great deal at a lovely hotel. The staff were all friendly, knowledgeable, kind and helpful. The room was clean, plenty of room for a packnplay and the pool was lovely and warm. Breakfast was an incredible spread with lots of wonderful options. The complimentary lunch ended up being a highlight as well - delicious and healthy. We’d love to come back here again. Thank you!

Property was clean and welcoming. The lobby was warm and inviting and front desk staff was helpful and friendly, especially, Enrique. Coffee and ice water were available in the lobby 24/7, and in the afternoons there were brownies and apples out for guests to enjoy. The best part was the hot complimentary breakfast buffet with plenty of choices, and the free snack lunch we received daily.

MORE LIKE BATES MOTEL THAN A BOUTIQUE HOTEL BOOK ANYWHERE BUT HERE This 2 star motel is more like the Bates Motel than a Boutique Hotel. The 2nd floor rooms are ONLY accessible from OUTSIDE the hotel and you must traverse outdoor metal stairs to even reach the 2nd floor. The beds are the old mattress and box spring set up and feel like you are sleeping on a desk. The bedding is not soft and pillowy. The bathroom towels are small, thin and musty smelling. I had to step on 2 spiders in the bathroom. The shower head caulking was half missing and looked like it could dismount any minute. While in the shower I started to slip on the shower floor and went to grab a safety rail. There was NO SAFETY RAIL anywhere in the shower and is not in the least compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act. The very next morning I checked out because I felt very unsafe there. The owner refused to refund my unused days. Code Enforcement should really look into how many of their showers have no safety rails as this was the whole reason I left. The Americans With Disabilities Act is in place to protect customers just like me. The breakfast buffet was mainly cold cereal, hot cereal, toast and fruit. Do yourself a favor and book anywhere but here!

Visiting California State Parks Truly eclectic boutique motel. The decorating style seems demand that nothing match in color, decade or purpose. Dark outdoor hallways painted with dark abstract patterns and colors are a little intimidating at night. But fun in the daylight. Rooms are clean, comfortable. Great amenities in their soap products. Breakfast a little skimpy- a single juice, toast or English muffin, 2 cold cereals, 1 style egg, no meats. This was our second stay there and would return.

Nothing about this property justifies the room rate. "Boutique"? Nope. Though recommended by another location that was booked up on the night of my stay, this was among the worst stays I've ever endured. When calling the property directly for a reservation, I was quoted a rate of $169 for a single guest for a Friday night. After repeatedly pointing out the rate in their website was $139, they begrudgingly agreed to that. I travel extensively for business, and have simple expectations... a clean, comfortable, and quiet room. The Redwood Riverwalk failed on all counts. It was mostly clean, with the exception of a fair bit of funk around the shower, where the curtain attachment was also coming loose. As for comfort, the table and chairs were plastic patio furniture, and the chair at the desk area was again a molded plastic number. As for quiet, I got to spend the night hearing snoring and HVAC sounds from other rooms, traffic noise, and the grind of a failing refrigerator compressor in my own room. Everything about the facility and services seemed amateurish and inattentive. I will not return.
