Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Waterfalls, Beaches, and Centuries-Old Historical Sites

Situated on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is best known for its sun-kissed beaches. But the province has several breathtaking geographical features inland as well. Damajagua is a natural water park of sorts—it features 27 waterfalls flowing from limestone formations. Tour guides lead groups through the falls, and you can swim and occasionally slide down the natural water slides.

You can get an aerial view of Puerto Plata and the Caribbean Sea on a teleférico, or cable car. One of them climbs 2,565 feet to the apex of Mount Isabel de Torres, which is crowned with botanical gardens and a replica of Rio de Janeiro’s massive Christ the Redeemer statue. Take a scenic drive to Parque Histórico La Isabela and you’ll find the remains of a church as well as the ruins of a colonial village.

Not bad The Residence Suites were beautiful. Five stars for the beauty, 3 stars overall. Plumbing system was horrible. Don't know why they just don't have a plunger in every unit. I had four units and every unit at one point or another had to report a backed up toilet or shower drain. There's a toilet brush though. Be careful, lots of ants if you're not careful where you put food. I don't like that you have to pay the full amount for the day you arrove and the day you leave for the all inclusive. I feel there should be a half rate since you get there around noon time and leave around lunch. And the fact the age is 12 & up for the full rate. Most kids just don't eat that much. Would be nice if you had the option of washing your own clothes. I paid $40 to have half a regular load done. My first time using an all-inclusive resort, I guess I just didn't know what to expect. I'll stick with full kitchen resorts from now on. Great shows and available excursions. Pools were nice, beach area was pretty awesome. I think maybe I had bed bugs in my room. I itched a lot while trying to sleep.

Hate the 1 in 3 rule. I am ready to go again asap. Just got home and ready to go back! The place is huge but the shuttles run every 20 minutes. The place is on the side of a mountain, so if you have walking disabilities, might not be your place. We ask for ground level and was lucky to get one. The staff is very good about taking your luggage for you. I have been to better AI resorts, but not better for the money. The food was delicious, although a little repetitive at breakfast and lunch. My RCI concierge was extremely informed and she spoke very good english. Every staff member I dealt with went above and beyond. Super nice people! The Welcome Party was OVER the TOP! Do NOT miss it!! SO MUCH FOOD THERE! Fireworks, Dancing, Live Concert. Biggest party I have been to in a while and it is somewhat formal. Fun night. Sadly, we didn't make it to any of the nightly shows. I loved all the fresh fruit for breakfast and the wine was very good for AI. I am picky about my dry red. Had dinner at a different restaurant every night. All were very good!! Loved the Mexican the most. I wasn't a huge fan of the beach due to it being so small. Also, they have it set up for the VIP people. I spent my time in the pools. There are several pools, but I prefered the small quiet pool right next to our room. The resort is very clean and other than a few boards that looked sketchy under the Asian restaurant, I give the resort a very good rating. You must remember you are in the DR when rating these places. The only two complaints I had the entire week was 1. my mattress was miserably hard, but when I ask for a topper they brought some padding for it and that helped a little. 2. The guy that sent us on the tour said it would take 20-30 minutes and over 2 hours later I had to make the man mad to get away from the "timeshare tour". The guy that took us on the tour was VERY pushy, but nothing compared to the men that tried to convince us after he left. HIGH PRESSURE! Either grow some or don't go!! I like to go on the tours to see the new upgrades offered, but I wish you could just say no and leave. This place didn't even offer a gift to get you to go, but did surprise us at the beginning with mommajuana rum. The resort is a gated community and I felt very safe there. The spa was okay. Expensive and leaves room for improvement, but nice and clean. The casino is basically a few slot machines. No table games.
