Property at a Glance: The Skylands Manor

With the castle’s at Skylands Manor weathered stone façade, it’d be easy to picture it in a medieval European city. The building was actually constructed in the 1920s, but its anachronistic design—including arched doorways, a cross-gabled roof, and Tudor Revival touches—gives the manor a fairy-tale charm. It helps that the building stands amid 1,000 acres of manicured gardens and woodlands.

  • Where you’ll stay: Opulently appointed rooms and suites with chandeliers, gold-leaf moulding, and built-in armoires.
  • Famous faces: The manor is run by Gerald and Robert Frungillo of Frungillo Caterers, whose reality show Masters of Reception ran on TLC.
  • Explore the grounds, which encompass a lakeside chapel and an orchard.
  • Eat like royalty in the manor’s grand dining room, whose centerpiece is an imposing carved oak mantel.

The highland town of Ringwood sits 39 miles northwest of New York City in the Ramapo Mountains—a region filled with lakes, forests, and other natural attractions. Ringwood State Park is especially busy in the winter, when it’s a popular place for ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. The park also contains some of the original buildings and mines dating back to the 18th century, when Ringwood was a leader in the iron industry.

Booking was easy. Check-in was rather effortless, and the experience was truly special. I was fortunate to have the whole castle to myself!! The Queen Antoinette Suite was lovely. Liz, the caretaker took such great care of me. It is a beautiful place, with exquisite woodwork. I visited in early spring, so I didn't see the grounds in their full bloom, but still enjoyed the area. The castle is off the beaten path, which suited me just fine. The peace and quiet was refreshing. Make sure you visit the library and sit awhile. It does have the quirks of a historicaI residence, but also the beautiful the character. I am already thinking about my return visit, and the next room I will experience!

We had an amazing time. It was so great to expropriate the castle and botanical gardens near by. I wish the AC worked a little bit better in our rooms as it was still pretty hot. Very welcoming staff and friendly guests, we will be back again but perhaps in a more cooler time.

A great weekend I was up to see friends I had been a Fireman in the town and we had many dept dinners there. Such a great place. The entire staff were super accommodating. I would recommend to couples as well the botanical gardens are there and in the winter you can’t beat the chistmas scenes.

Don’t stay here Had to park 1/4 mile away and walk to the manor in 90 degree heat. 3rd floor room had to carry my luggage up myself. No hot water. Leaking sink faucets. No knob on the inside of bathroom door. Poor TV reception. Paid $200+. Not worth $50. Don’t stay here

Sleep in a castle more often! What a unique experience! The castle was beautiful and full of character as one would imagine. It’s quite literally in the middle of a botanical garden so that adds to the whimsy. Vinny the Innkeeper was friendly and helpful and he went above and beyond. As a solo woman traveler I felt very safe. I will be back!
