In 1929, a team of builders and architects set out for the North Carolina woods to construct a getaway inspired by the iconic designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. Although the scale of that dream was curtailed by the stock market crash later that year, the project did produce the Skyline Lodge, which still stands today amid 40 acres of old-growth forest. Expanded in the ’60s and renovated again after that, the lodge exudes rustic charm and seclusion. Quiet guest rooms feature private balconies or terraces, and many come with working fireplaces.
