Barbados: Seafood, Sugarcane, and Tropical Flora in a Former British Colony

Barbados was a British colony until 1966, explaining the popularity of afternoon teas and cricket matches. But Barbadians (often shortened to “Bajans”) have formed their own identity, starting with seafood-centric cuisine. Food stands and restaurants dot the roadsides along the western coast, serving Barbados’s national dish: flying fish paired with cou-cou, a mash of cornmeal and okra. Mount Gay Distilleries is worth a stop for a tour and the chance to sample Bajan rum. The company has used the island’s abundant sugarcane to make aromatic rum since 1703, making it the oldest rum brand in the world.

Barbados’s natural beauty can be found all around the island. Trams tour the popular Harrison’s Cave, where stalactites hang from huge limestone caverns. Driving or catching a cab west to Holetown brings you to the Folkestone Marine Park and Museum, where a reef formed by a sunken ship flourishes with sea anemones, giant crabs, and decaying GPS screens. And flora lovers have several spectacular gardens to visit, including Orchid World & Tropical Flower Garden, which lives up to its name with thousands of blooming orchids. Flower Forest is located on a former sugar plantation and is filled with tropical plants including lilies and palms.

Location!!! Our first visit to the Caribbean and so glad we stayed at the Soco for our visit! We walked through the front door and the wow factor hit us! Clean comfortable lobby with a vista of the Caribbean Sea through a floor to ceiling window. We were checked in by Shaniqua who gave us a welcome glass of Prosecco and was so friendly. She also sorted taxis for us for a couple of trips we had within our week. Our room was big with fab air con. Every day we came back from the beach the air con was VERY welcome! We were on the lowest floor and were overwhelmed with the view from our balcony. Stunning is an understatement The bed was huge and very comfortable. The housekeeping lady did a brilliant job each day and always had time to chat. Randy and Shane at the bar were great! Always ready for a chat and kept the drinks flowing. We’ve always had our food buffet style on our all inclusive holidays before, the Soco is fully A la carte. I personally loved this as my food was cooked to order. There is breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. All have several options so you won’t go hungry! Would 100% recommend the Soco Thankyou all xx

Fabulous stay at Soco Just returned from our fifth visit to The Soco. Once again we have had the best time. Fourth floor room overlooking the beautiful sea. The food is absolutely top notch !! In my opinion it was as nice if not better than some of the fine restaurants we visited the previous week on the West coast . Many thanks to the wonderful chefs. Thank you to everyone of the staff I just have to mention Shane who keeps your drinks flowing and entertains with his singing . Lastly Michelle you are the icing on the cake thank you so much for making our holiday so wonderful. Our night at harbour lights was such a memorable night out with several of the hotel guests . Once again thank you Soco see you next year.

Excellent stay at SoCo Hotel Amazing holiday. Fabulous SoCo Hotel. All staff was great in their own way. Michelle can’t do enough, such a pleaser and making sure your time in Barbados is perfect. Also Shane & Randy, also keeping your glass topped up. Room was always clean and tidy, shout out to Trudy who has the biggest smile _. Delicious food, no complaints there. If I had to say anything negative it would be a little choice of different beers and also presecco available and not just as a welcome drink. Thankyou Soco
