Hotel at a Glance: The Stowehof

The notable Stowehof alpine hotel sits on a picturesque 26-acre estate. The sweeping views stretch from the resort’s small pond to the top of Mount Mansfield (Vermont’s tallest peak), and the interior surrounds guests in dark woods and floor-to-ceiling windows that maintain a close connection with nature. Each room offers a unique setting with some rooms being grand in size, while others are cozy or feature wide-open mountain views. Inside the resort, guests can relax by playing cards in a game nook, shooting some pool, or reading a book in the expansive lounge by one of the several fireplaces. The spacious outdoors invites visitors to stroll through the meadows and roast marshmallows at the fire pit.

  • Read a good book near the communal living room’s fireplace, relax in the sauna, or take a dip in the indoor pool.
  • Sip cocktails at the Fritz Bar.
  • Tee off: Thirty-six holes of golf wait just 5 miles away at Stowe Mountain Resort in warmer months, but you can also ski down the mountain trails or take gondola rides when the snow falls.
  • Winter fun: cross-country skiing, sledding, tubing, and snowshoeing
  • Other outdoor fun: Play beach volleyball on a sand court or throw nine holes of frisbee golf on the free on-site course. Hiking trails are also available right off the property.

Stowe, Vermont: Winter-Sports Wonderland in the Shadow of Mount Mansfield

When the snows of winter blanket Mount Mansfield, the town of Stowe transforms from a quiet mountain town into a bustling haven for skiers, snowboarders, and every winter-sports enthusiast in between. When you’re not taking a run down one of the mountain’s well-groomed trails, test your winter mettle with Nordic-style cross-country skiing, outdoor skating at Spruce Peak, or a trip to a trick-friendly terrain park.

The spirit of wintry adventure extends past the mountain’s peaks. Stowe is also home to the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum, a stately colonial-style landmark where curators preserve the legacies of local legends ranging from members of the US Ski Team to the 10th Mountain Division, which fought brutal alpine battles during the waning days of World War II. The cold weather also takes center stage during January’s Winter Carnival, an annual celebration of chilly days featuring a professional ice-carving competition, screenings of ski movies, and nightly celebrations at area taverns.

Disappointed Our expectations based on the website were not met. This was a return trip to the Stowe area for our 40th wedding anniversary and this was not the surprise I planned for my wife. The romantic weekend was salvaged by the visits to the surrounding locals.

Lovely Days at Stowehof This place is lovely. First of all, the LOCATION with the view of the mountains is gorgeous. The overall vibe is shabby/chic, common areas with lots of comfy couches where to sit with a book and relax. There are also many fireplaces, plus a fire-pit outside to enjoy in the evenings. The outdoor pool is great, while the indoor one is a bit small and not kept too well, but not big deal. Kids and dogs are welcomed, the overall atmosphere is relaxed and very homey. Staff is courteous and they try their best to meet guests' needs. They are currently experiencing a shortage of personell due to post pandemic situation, so if you go please be patient and understanding!

Hidden Gem To speak to some of the more negative reviews, I would like to start by saying….does it need a fresh coat of paint in some places or some boards replaced on the deck, yes. Does it look aged with some slightly stained carpets, yes. (It is a pet friendly hotel) I am telling you, put the nit picking aside and enjoy the truly family-centered, attention to detail experience the Stowehof has to offer. The building is truly lovely. This is not your cookie cutter hotel chain. It is an unique opportunity to relax outside, have a wonderful bite at Fritz Bar and unwind in a rustic-chic lodging with beautifully different and nicely appointed rooms. The fire pit is great, even brought out a s’mores kits for my niece. Also, Two pools, hot tub, various lawn games and a pool table. The front desk’s extraordinarily helpful Robert made our stay! This man is so kind and goes above and beyond. We will definetly be back. Thanks for making our mini vacay great. Note to travelers: Try not to stay in Stowe on a Monday and Tuesday, MANY restaurants and sights closed those days. We learned the hard way. _
