Historic Hotel Overlooking Hudson River and Military Academy

With the Hudson River to the east and the United States Military Academy to the west, the Thayer Hotel at West Point sits between a natural wonder and a historic landmark. Built in 1926, the hotel has hosted US presidents and international dignitaries visiting the Hudson Highlands. The hotel’s crenelated-stone façade, soaring towers, and battlements recall the Gothic architecture at West Point.

Each of the Thayer’s deluxe guest rooms and executive suites looks out on views of the rolling hills lining the Hudson River or the military academy’s prestigious buildings. Walk through the grand lobby of the hotel and you’ll find portraits of military leaders and national flags hanging on the walls.

During the fall and winter months, there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor activity. Guests will have access to the West Point Golf Course, open through mid-November, and the Victor Constant Ski Slope, which offers skiing and snowboarding. Both are only a 10 minute drive from the hotel.

Several onsite dining options are available. Named after General Douglas MacArthur—a former West Point cadet—MacArthur’s Riverview Restaurant serves a diverse selection of international cuisine amid Gothic windows and gold-trimmed pillars. Here chefs trained at the Culinary Institute of America craft dishes named after notable West Point graduates.

West Point, New York: Historic Town Along the Hudson River

Located about 50 miles north of Manhattan, West Point sits in the beautiful Lower Hudson Valley, a woodland region dotted with sleepy villages and steep rock cliffs. Its principal claim to fame is the United States Military Academy, a National Historic Landmark that’s been training cadets since 1802. Take a stroll on campus to see the fortress-like Cadet Chapel, the Superintendent’s Quarters (built in 1820), and the monuments to Generals George Washington, Douglas MacArthur, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. From mid-April until mid-November, take in sweeping views of the Hudson River outdoors at the Zulu Time Rooftop Bar and Lounge, open Wednesday-Sunday evenings for travelers to enjoy cocktails and light fare.

For some of the best views of the valley, head to Boscobel House and Gardens, an early 19th-century estate set on a bluff above the Hudson River. Considered one of the finest showcases for Federal architecture and decorative arts, the mansion has an excellent collection of period furnishings, large-scale historical paintings, and horse-drawn dumbwaiters. Other nearby attractions include the award-winning restaurants at The Culinary Institute of America and the more than 100 outdoor sculptures at the 500-acre Storm King Art Center.
