Londonderry, Vermont: Ski Resort Destination near Quaint Vermont Towns

While the southern Vermont town of Londonderry has just 1,700 year-round residents, its population swells during the winter, when visitors come to ski at the traditional, no-frills Magic Mountain ski area. Its reputation is boosted by the fact that it’s the home of Olympic gold snowboarder Ross Powers and Jake Burton, the owner of Burton Snowboards. But Londonderry is a year-round vacation spot, with beautiful mountain scenery and a central location near other historic Vermont towns, including Manchester and Dorset.

Check out Taylor Farm, a 180-year-old working dairy farm where you can tour the cheese-making facility, go for a countryside wagon ride, or visit the animals (be sure to pick up a wheel of cheese to take home). A half-hour’s drive away is Manchester, which draws regional visitors to Hildene, the home President Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd. This sprawling, circa-1905 estate has a working goat cheese farm and lush gardens on its 412 preserved acres, as well as its own train stop—appropriate since Robert Todd Lincoln was the chairman of a rail car company.
