Hotel at a Glance: Top Secret Chicago Hotel

The hotel puts guests in a neighborhood-like locale without sacrificing convenience. It's just half a mile from Oak Street Beach, where the lakefront complements views of the city's skyline. The hotel is also about 1 mile from River North's bars and restaurants and 3 miles from family-friendly Navy Pier.

  • Guest rooms are decked out in a wide pallet soothing earth tones, from off-white to slate grey to rusty orange and lavender.
  • Best way to relax: with a mani-pedi at the spa
  • Local color: The hotel's neo-impressionist artwork was created by a Chicagoan.

Chicago’s Gold Coast: Ritzy Neighborhood with Historic Mansions and Upscale Restaurants

Just north of the Loop and along Lake Michigan, the Gold Coast neighborhood occupies some of the city’s most desirable real estate. The area’s reputation as an upscale residential spot dates back to 1882, when wealthy businessmen began building castle-like mansions along the waterfront. You can still see some of these estates along Lake Shore Drive; for example, the International Museum of Surgical Science is housed in a 1917 mansion modeled after a French chateau. The Gold Coast’s stylish legacy still exists in the clothing stores lining North Michigan Avenue, the so-called Magnificent Mile. Walk down nearby Oak Street to find the boutiques of high-end designers like Chanel, Prada, and Hermès.

Those looking for a hip nightlife scene will find trendy restaurants and nightclubs—many of which are open until 5 a.m.—catering to a well-dressed crowd. For people-watching and the occasional celebrity sighting, head to Rush and Division, a see-and-be-seen spot dotted with upscale shops and classic Chicago bars.

Welcoming and Inclusive The Claridge House is such a welcoming and inclusive space. Every person who works there is amazing. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and just right for a short or longer stay. This is my fourth visit and I will continue to choose this hotel.

Adequate Great location, safe and close to restaurants and public transportation. No frills interactions with front desk. Room was very clean but very small, with very limited closet space, bed was comfortable. Bathroom was nice but small, especially counter space. Nice lobby and bar area. Amenity fee is just a pretext to up the rate after comparison shopping, since it gives you what other hotels have anyway. Someone here mentioned a complimentary wine hour, which was not mentioned to me. Note to hotel: no matter how much “value” you think you’re giving us, we abhor amenity fees. Also, there were pride flags everywhere and special pride packages, so if you have a family or don’t care for people sharing their sexual preferences, then this is not your place (or mine). The hotel is adequate otherwise.

Not worth the price at all This is not a four star hotel. The rooms are outdated and not fully cleaned. The shower curtain was not long enough to trap in water, so the bathroom floor was constantly wet. There were stains on the floor and bed sheets. The “complimentary” water bottles cost you $25 a day, but that’s only charged after you check out. Can’t opt out of that one ahead of time. You need to schedule house keeping, but that wasn’t clearly communicated to me when I checked in. I really did not enjoy my experience here and would not recommend.
