Dallas, Texas: Rejuvenated Urban Districts and Historical Parks

Though some know Dallas only for the massive AT&T Stadium (which is actually in Arlington), the city is also an enclave of arts and nature, overflowing with botanical gardens, art galleries, and live theater. Historic Main Street connects many of the city’s recently rejuvenated urban districts, as well as the popular Main Street Garden, a block-long public park surrounded by architecturally significant buildings.

A short walk from downtown Dallas, you’ll find horse-drawn carriages clopping along brick streets in the city’s historic West End district, which dates back to the 19th century. This part of the city also contains Dealey Plaza, where President Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. At The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, housed in the former Texas School Book Depository, you can visit the spot where Lee Harvey Oswald is believed to have shot at Kennedy’s presidential motorcade.

NOT THE RELAXING WEEKEND WE WERE PLANNING ON The trip was a disappointment from the moment we walked in. Check in time is 4pm. There was one girl at the front desk and the line was nine people deep. We literally waited 30 minutes to check in. Never saw anyone in charge to speak to about any concerns. We had a room on the 12th floor and the hallways from the elevator to our room were sweltering. The front desk worker asked if we had a view preference, we did not but apparently we should have. She said it was a river view but it looked more like a dirty drainage ditch. Jade Waters lazy river was the biggest disappointment of all. There had to be numerous fire and water code violations. The hotel sells resort day passes so people not even staying in the hotel have access to the water park. No one could or would tell me how many passes they allow on any given Saturday. So hotel guests spend hundreds to stay at the hotel to have acess to the luxury water amenities but it was anything but luxurious. There were literally less than 40 floats in the park. The water was dirty and murky and if a child or adult was under the water, you would never know. You were shoulder to shoulder with strangers. It took 45 min to get food or drinks. It was $14 for a small pina coloda plus a 20% gratuity every time you purchase anything. The swim up bar was 4 people deep so no faster to try and get things from there. There were NO water stations any where to be seen. We finally asked for water at the only snack bar in the back of the park. They did give free small cups of water when asked...but they would rather make you buy a $6 bottled water with 20% gratutity. The park area was dirty with empty food trays and cups. There were lifeguards along the lazy river but there is no way they could see anyone strugggling. One lifeguard was braiding their hair and another life guard was dressed in a servers outfit, so I don't know if he was trained or just filling in? We paid for a late check out (2:00)but were greeted by housekeeping banging on the door at 9am?! We came back to our room at 1:40 only to find that we were already locked out. So down 12 floors, wait in line, get key re-coded, go up 12 floors to find out key still doesnt work....so got to do it all AGAIN. There were many angry guests! Under staffed, managers stay in their offices and let the poor front desk employees catch the wrath of guests. Never saw anyone to ask questions or express concerns to. Even emailing Hilton directly, I don't think they care. So take your business elsewhere. Your family will thank you. For this kind of money it should be a memorable for all the right reasons...not wrong ones.

Would have preferred more dining options. The hotel was lovely and well managed. The fine dining steak house was excellent but the only other place to eat was a cocktail nook with snack type food. You had to go to the bar to order and when we asked for the cocktail menu were told to order whatever we wanted and they could make it. There were drinks available in a Top Golf but it was tiny and empty. We were there for 3 nights and the second day our room was never cleaned. We were with friends on the same floor and their room wasn’t cleaned either. I think next time will find a better hotel.

A Great Place to Rest The bed slept immaculate for me. I did not want to get out of the bed. The room was exceptionally clean. The staff were very polite and professional. The hotel in its entirety was always clean which is a plus in itself. I would definitely stay again.
