Detroit: World-Class Museums and Revitalization Projects in the Motor City

The Motor City has certainly seen better days, but if you’re willing to look, you can still find a lot of worthwhile things to do and see. The downtown area has many top-flight cultural institutions and museums, and an influx of young people and artists are working to revitalize the city.

The 658,000-square-foot Detroit Institute of Arts, located downtown, comprises 100 galleries, an auditorium, a lecture hall, and a reference library. Among its vast collection: a dragon-tile relief from the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and a self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh. One of the city’s most fascinating art displays can’t be found at a museum or gallery. Tyree Guyton’s The Heidelberg Project is two blocks of once-decrepit houses that have been transformed into an open-air art installation, with colorful sculptures made out of discarded items including stuffed animals, vinyl records, old shoes, and scrap metal.

Hotel With Easy Access to the Airport The staff at the check in were awesome. They were friendly, accommodating and professional. The hotel appears to be aged, however, some of the rooms have been updated. My room was updated and very nice, however, my business associate's room was not. The hotel offers shuttle service from and to the airport. The driver was professional and helpful. The hotel appears to be within walking distance from the airport, however, it is not - there is a wall blocking walk entrance to the hotel. Shuttle service is best.

Good Night Sleep with Unexpected Overnight Near DTW We are retired airline staff and found ourselves stranded overnight in Detroit unable to get two seats home. We redeemed Marriott points at this hotel due to its reasonable point redemption rate. My Platinum Elite status was recognized at check in with an upgraded room, bonus points and access to the Pantry. The room appeared recently renovated, equipped with bottled water, a fridge, a coffee maker and lots of USB ports for charging. The beds were comfortable and the shower and bathroom were well-designed. The room appeared very clean. The Pantry was basic, containing a good variety of packaged snacks, cereal, coffee, soft drinks and water. The shuttle to/from the airport was adequate. The driver wasn’t very nice. About 10 minutes after making our reservation, we left the airport and had difficulty finding the hotel shuttle pickup spot. The signage was poor. I called the hotel asking about the shuttle. While doing so, the shuttle wizzed by us. The front desk person at the hotel called the driver to tell him that he just missed us. About 10 minutes later he pulled up again and gave us kind of a lecture about waiting for us for over 10 minutes. That’s impossible, we only made the reservations about 10 minutes before he supposedly was waiting. I don’t know what he was talking about but it was inappropriate to take out his grievances on a guest. In spite of this one negative, we would definitely stay here again if stranded at DTW for the night since we slept well and found the location convenient.

Graduation After a 6 hour flight I was in the shuttle with a great driver. Then I met Gabrieal at the front desk. Checkin was a breeze and she was so kind and professional. At breakfast the first day Alena was my server. She was quick with the coffee and my breakfast was delivered in less than 5 minutes. It was hot and fresh with a smile. During my stay Tonya met me in the lobby with kind words and directions. It was a great place to stay.
