Gainesville, Florida: World-Class Museums, Historical College Buildings, and Legendary Sports Facilities

Located in northern Florida, Gainesville conveniently sits in the middle of several Florida destinations: Orlando, St. Augustine, Tampa, and Jacksonville are all within a two-hour drive. Livability.com named it the number one college town in 2010, calling it “a sports fan’s paradise” because of the community’s fervent love for the University of Florida’s football team. You can’t avoid the Gator logo here—it’s brandished on store windows, car bumpers, and sportswear all over town. A visit to the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, affectionately known as “The Swamp,” reaffirms the hype as more than 90,000 rowdy, orange-and-blue-clad spectators fill the stands. But the highlight of any match comes when the band breaks into the Jaws theme song and fans collectively raise their arms for an intimidating Gator Chomp.

Much of the action in Gainesville centers on the campus, which lies about 2 miles from downtown Gainesville and is known for its cluster of historic buildings. Century Tower, a more-than-150-foot-tall Gothic carillon, stands out both for its height and frequent clanging of the “Florida Chimes” bell tune. On the campus’s western edge, the Florida Museum of Natural History tells the state’s history with more than 500 fossils and Native American artifacts. While you’re there, take a stroll through the museum’s Butterfly Rainforest, where hundreds of butterfly species from around the world live among lush, tropical trees and cascading waterfalls.

Never Again May I booked through hotels.com for my Birthday celebration and when I got there to the hotel breakfast wasn’t added on and the fact that they charge for breakfast is insane. My rate was $147 tax and all with hotels.com; however, because they didn’t add the breakfast like I asked, so the manager cancelled my reservation. Then the manager booked me a new reservation that was $200 & added breakfast ($20/person even though on hotels.com and hilton website said $10/person), but told me since I had to deal with the waiting would only charge $50 for the stay (I didn’t know they cancelled my reservation). They had put us in room 301. The air conditioner was only one with vents facing window/wall and didn’t even hit 70 degrees until late/ early morning. Then the accessible shower was a joke! The shower was long in length but one person width so very small and 2/3 taken up by “L” shaped seat wall attachment that couldn’t fold up. This room is also the furtherest away from elevators so very difficult for a person with a disability (my husband has cerebral palsy) to travel to the elevators.

Not a good experience. Very disappointing for a full service Hilton. Tried to call for over an hour prior to arrival with no answer. Check in was routine. Came down for dinner and we were informed they were short staffed. All servers acted angry. Out of baked potatoes, at 6pm on a Friday poor service. Next morning no staff so had to eat in lounge with limited staff again. Same situation Poor service and angry acting staff. Tried to order Saturday evening, waited one hour for to go order. Room was ok. Nothing worth the cost per night. We left next morning and elected to get breakfast elsewhere.

A perfect place to stay in Gainsville Spent one night at the hilton in gainsville with my family in a room with two queen beds. The hotel is spotless, super clean, the room is pretty big, the wifi works great, the pillows are comfortable and the staff were very helpful . We didn't have breakfast at the hotel.

Unpleasant experience Stayed two nights while visiting University of Florida with grandson. Standard Hilton experience except for two big negatives. First, room was not serviced while i was away during the day. Found out you have to “ask” for this??!! Second room service breakfast came not on a tray but in a bag in plastic containers. Ugh. On the plus side Shulas steakhouse restaurant on premises was excellent as expected. Will not repeat here.

Great Hotel This was a great hotel! Rooms was relatively clean. Staff were very friendly and accomodating. There are 2 on-site restaurants Shula and No Name Lounge. Foods recommended in the on-site restaurants are as follows: Lava cake, lunch fries, lunch grilled chicken sandwich. Foods not recommended are: lobster bisque, salad, chocolate cake.
