Bend, Oregon: Year-Round Adventure in Cascade Range Mountains

Although gray skies loom over most of the Pacific Northwest, Bend averages 300 days of sun per year. Because of its warm, dry climate, high-desert terrain pervades the area in the form of thick juniper trees, arid winds, and snowcapped mountains. Imposing Mt. Bachelor tempts skiers and snowboarders with more than 70 powder-covered slopes. Summer activities abound at spots such as Smith Rock State Park, whose many easy day hikes provide beautiful vistas of deep river canyons inhabited by golden eagles, mule deer, and river otters. A five-minute drive southwest leads travelers to the Deschutes River, home to both smooth waters and churning Class III rapids. Whitewater rafters barrel along with the current as mountain bikers traverse miles of hilly trails lining the river’s banks.

In downtown Bend, travelers find a cluster of restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. With outdoor tables and hanging pots of purple begonias dotting every street corner, the area has the feel of a quaint East Coast hamlet. Instead of chain restaurants and big-box stores, visitors find one-of-a-kind nooks, including nine local microbreweries. Among the best of these is Deschutes Brewery, which has earned acclaim from both beer-festival judges and local sippers (read our interview with Deschutes brewmasters). The award-winning Obsidian stout encompasses notes of chocolate, espresso, roasted malt, and black barley. A passion for beer pervades the city; it’s not unusual to catch sight of the Cycle Pub, a mobile keg on wheels propelled by up to 14 customers pedaling through the downtown streets.

Great Stay A nice, clean downtown location that allows you to walk only 1 mile to the breweries and bakeries. Easy access to Mt Bachelor. Most importantly, a friendly and accommodating front office staff. We had a wonderful stay; they even allowed our dog.

Great stay Stayed for nearly a week in early March. Great place; we’ll be back. Room was good size and lots of helpful amenities. Very clean. All Covid protocols in place. Staff was great...staff I encountered in the hallways cleaning other rooms and front desk. Ben was especially helpful answering questions. It was nice that the place was quiet in the evenings and mornings...didn’t hear any slamming doors. Thank you all.

A good quick stay This property is generally ok. 30 minutes to cascade national scenic byway along snow mountains. One hour to paulina peak drive in newberry volcanic monument. Free parking and free breakfast. Room was functional and comfortable. It could be better if the staff at the breakfast could have more patience.

Poor Soundproofing but wonderful service from Ben I really want to love this place and give it 5 stars but unfortunately there are some issues that just makes it impossible. The biggest issue here is soundproofing. You can feel the floors vibrating when heavy footsteps walk across the hallways. I could actually feel it while I'm laying in bed. Im glad I got the top floor otherwise I will be hearing my neighbors above me. If good soundproofing is a big deal for you and you are a light sleeper or have noise sensitivity, this is not the place for you. Whats interesting is that even if my room is facing the parking lot, I never had issues with noise from the outside, everything was from the inside. Don't even get me started with doors slamming hard and loud. The cleaning crew makes this worse as they join in with the noise in the morning through mid afternoon. I was wearing earplugs with headphone music and I can still hear some of these noises. The rooms are really showing its wear and tear and age. I had to rig the phone wires to get the audio working fine. The light bulb was flickering and even after I reported it, they never fixed it the next day so I just let it be. One of the burners dont work. I stayed in room 223. What saved this place from a dismal 2 stars is the customer service provided by Ben from the front desk. There was another dark haired younger latin girl there who was not bad but the other blondish woman in the front desk doesnt cut it for me. If these issues dont bother you then I think this property will be fine. Otherwise, I will look somewhere else. We always end up at the residence inn.

Reliable Marriott Stay Everything was as expected for a Marriott property. Clean rooms with great service. BReakfast was served taking into account social distancing. Dog friendly. Only downside was King bed with sleeper instead of 2 queen beds. Would recommend.
