Johnson City, New York: History and Heritage in New York’s “Triple Cities”

Along with nearby Binghamton and Endicott, the village of Johnson City makes up part of New York’s “Triple Cities” along the Pennsylvania border. In the 19th century, this region earned the nickname “the Valley of Opportunity” thanks to its reputation for plentiful jobs and innovations from companies like Endicott Johnson and IBM (which was founded nearby). You can see evidence of the boom years through the iconic landmarks that remain, including one of Endicott Johnson’s famous Square Deal arches, as well as six antique carousels, which earned the town its second nickname: the Carousel Capital of the World.

In addition to honoring its past, the area also looks toward the present. In recent years, Binghamton downtown has nurtured a thriving arts and gallery scene, and cultural institutions such as the Roberson Museum and Science Center attracts visitors from throughout the region. Past or present, the region will always have a soft spot for its signature dish: the spiedie, which combines spit-grilled meats with soft Italian rolls and just a drizzle of the marinade that make each bite so flavorful.

This is an older looking hotel that has not been updated in many years; however, it has been maintained extremely well and is extremely clean.

Not flashy but favorite This has become our favorite place to stay in the Binghamton area. We're here once a year or so to see family. We like the quiet, the walking paths and the view over the valley especially in fall when the colors blaze. We like the building's character - not a soulless beige box - and the old photos of its history as an IBM retreat. We like the location, 2 minutes from a Wegman's with a great cafe, and the local ethnic restaurants. The included breakfast buffet is by no means fancy (the expected eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles) but still a step above average: the fruit salad is fresh & pretty, the yogurt is Chobani, the bread & bagels have heft. And the tables have white cloths and real silverware. My very favorite highlight is the treat of an actual bathtub soak after a long day's drive. I hope they never tear them out for just showers like so many places have. Everything is clean, though some edges show the patina of time. The service is pleasant and well trained. Never tried the spa or golf but they seem popular. We appreciate their reliability & we'll keep coming back.

Great for special occasions I was here for my daughter's wedding shower from out of town. The outside surroundings are beautiful and the rooms inside are also, The buffet food was excellent. The staff was friendly and attentive. This was a great venue for this event and would be wonderful for any occasion!

Beautiful hotel with an exceptionally kind staff We spent three nights at Traditions in April. Our visit was a somber one, for we had traveled to Johnson City to attend the funeral of a young nephew who had died suddenly. In spite of the sad circumstances of our visit, we were able to enjoy and appreciate the hospitality of the staff as well as the comforts of the hotel and the surrounding grounds. We stayed in room 2102, a king room with an excellent bed and a spacious bathroom with all the amenities. Our room rate included a superb breakfast buffet each morning, and it offered a wide range of well-prepared food, such as scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage, beautiful fresh fruit, yogurts, and breads. The coffee was particularly good and strong. Emily, a friendly young woman who took care of the guests in the breakfast room, was wonderfully kind and someone we looked forward to seeing each day. The staff could not have been more generous to us, especially after they learned why we had traveled to Traditions from Ohio. Barbara at the reception was always inquiring about how we and the rest of our family were coping, and Mr. Vincent Sano, the general manager, is a hands-on overseer of the hotel who is always visible and eager to do anything you might need to make your stay enjoyable. On our last morning at Traditions, the parents of the young man who had died came to the hotel to make their goodbyes to us before we headed back to Ohio. We had alerted the desk staff that they would be coming to see us off, and the staff arranged an act of kindness which was extraordinary and well beyond anything we could ever have expected. I hesitate to specify what this act of kindness was, since I would not want to set an awkward precedent for the hotel. Suffice it to say that the staff, and especially Mr. Sano, extended a warm welcome and a heartfelt act of kindness to two grieving parents who had just lost their only child. We will be returning to Traditions in July to reconnect with family, and we look forward to seeing the Traditions staff once again, especially since this upcoming stay will not carry the heavy emotional weight of the first visit. In many ways, the Traditions staff will be part of the “family” that we’ll be very happy to see again. Bill McLoughlin in Columbus, Ohio
