Downtown Seattle, Washington: Art, Architecture, and Famous Coffee in Coastal Urban Center

Street performances, flowers, and fresh-caught fish find a common home at Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Founded in 1907, it's where both sightseers and locals shop. Drop into the Fish Market to watch the staff tossing salmon, halibut, and cod—a famous tradition. There are plenty of nonperishable goods as well, including jewelry and other crafts. And you might want to take a picture in front of the market’s iconic sign, which now rivals the Space Needle as the city’s most recognizable symbol.

The original Starbucks coffeehouse has operated out of Pike Place since the 1970s. You can stop here for a pick-me-up before taking the half-mile walk to Seattle's Central Library. Whether you love books or architecture or both, this futuristic-looking library is worth a visit. The 11-story glass-and-steel structure consists almost entirely of diamond-shaped windows arranged to look like a geometric net. The otherworldly interior is a playground for book lovers. Be sure to check out the library’s “living room” in the morning, when sunlight creates a kaleidoscopic shadow on the floor.

Great Stay - Exceptional Service! Just finished a great stay at the University Inn. We were in Seattle so my daughter could participate in a UW volleyball camp. The location was awesome and central to everything we wanted to do both on and off the UW campus. Hotel is very cute with a great swimming pool. The front desk staff were exceptionally helpful (especially Casper). Front desk staff provided great recommendations on places to eat, dry cleaning, etc. I forgot my laptop charger and was in a bit of a panic about that since I needed to work remotely part of the time we were there - no problem - front desk staff loaned me a charger! They had everything I needed and happily shared. Front desk staff also helped me with my luggage which was very sweet.

Great place to rest while my mom was having surgery nearby We were staying overnight in Seattle’s UDistrict while my mother was having neurosurgery at the nearby university medical center. The hospitality I received from hotel staff, right from check in to check out, and the amazingly comfortable room went a long way to taking my mind off my mother’s surgery. Everything about my room seemed specifically designed to ensure I had a great stay, and I slept better than I had in any other hotel. From the quality of the linens (especially the double duvet sleeping style they utilize), the selection of pillows, and the mattress that felt just right all ensured I had a fantastic nights sleep. Head Pineapple Rye, manager of University Inn, has really ensured that this property and its staff will provide you with a wonderful stay.

Hidden fees from the hotel, go somewhere else In terms of a standard hotel experience everything is fair enough. The workers there are great and there are no problems with them. The problem with this hotel are the "hidden" fees. Any booking agency will say parking, wifi, pool, or other amenities are "included". What this doesn't tell you is they charge for it all. I booked this room for 130 a night and got hit with an extra 80 dollars worth of fees. 20 bucks per night for parking, and 20 bucks per night for wifi, a tin water bottle, and access to the pool. It is actually insane, borderline criminal, that what a best western or a motel 6 will give you for free, is a 20 dollar charge here that YOU CANNOT OPT OUT OF. You cannot say "hey I don't want this repackaged airport dasani watter bottle, internet, or pool access and I will keep my 40 bucks and go get drunk at the local bar with it". No, they thrust it upon you at check in like when you go home with a someone you met at a bar and right as things are getting hot and heavy they bust our a medical chart of STDs. Don't stay here, whatever 40 bucks per night you are "saving" over spending it at a nicer hotel in downtown youll end up spending anyway once you arrive.

Comfortable. Great location Pros: Great location. Comfortable and clean room. Courteous staff. Everything works well. Bed lenin and towels are of good quality. Will definitely consider revisiting, when needed. Cons: Mattresses are soft and may not work for everyone. The stuffed husky pup in the room gets passed on from one occupant’s stay to the next (occupants cannot take the stuffed pup). Thus, I am not sure how clean or hygienic the stuffed pup is. My daughter couldn’t keep away!

Awful Noisy. There is a garage alarm that goes off constantly. Staff just agreed it was loud so I didn’t mention my other issues. Shower didn’t drain. Carpet sticky. And the final insult on the day before we checked out was my AirPods were taken from the room. I had emptied my purse to lighten my load. Big mistake. The one plus is it’s near Portage bay which had an amazing breakfast menu. Stay at the graduate. Or even better stay downtown Seattle and take an Uber up to the university or the light rail.
