Santa Barbara, California: Beach Town Nicknamed "The American Riviera"

Santa Barbara stands out among the towns along the 400-mile stretch between San Francisco and Los Angeles thanks to its prime location: it’s sandwiched between Pacific beaches to the south and the Santa Ynez Mountains to the north. It's urban, but not overly so—the downtown corridor along State Street is lined with mom-and-pop shops, cafés, bars, art galleries, and movie theaters.

A subtle Mediterranean influence graces most buildings: there are red-tile roofs, stucco façades, and Moorish-style arches. The climate is breezy and warm all year, providing an environment for lush tropical foliage to thrive. It's easy to see why the city bills itself as "The American Riviera."

Very rustic bed and breakfast. We had a nice view of the water from our balcony. The wine and cheese was great before going out for dinner. Also the breakfast was great before we got back on the road. Overall enjoyable experience would definitely come back again.

The hotel was just perfect. The atmosphere was so comfy and cozy that conversation with others was just easy. Breakfast and happy hour were great. Staff was kind, funny, helpful and informative. Location was perfect. Room was clean, cute and comfortable. Balcony over looking the pool is great for early mornings or sunset. Hot tub was clean and relaxing. All in all I was pleasantly surprised!

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid!!!!! Where do I begin? The person running the front desk, while friendly, talks so fast that you can't follow her. Upon check-in, I was assured a specific rate during the week and on the weekend which was agreed upon by the owner herself. I was charged more. The initial room I was given was dirty and I was given the option of another room. That room's windows were broken. I was given the option of another room but it hadn't been cleaned and the freezer/frig didn't work. Finally, I settled on a room even though it was dirty, had mildew in the shower, only one light worked, the fan didn't work. had broken window slats in bathroom and the front windows slats didn't close. Most outlets didn't work. The room was incredibly dark. The bed slanted to the right and the pillows were outrageously lumpy. The breakfast in the morning was a joke with expired oatmeal packets, stale cereal, moldy fruit and horrible coffee. The maid came to my room the day after check-in and didn't speak English. She instructed me to only speak Spanish to her. Thankfully I speak Spanish. But that's not the case with everyone. She asked when I needed room cleaning. I told her every other day was fine. I didn't receive any maid service while I was there, had to go to the front desk and ask for towels and toiletries, had to empty out my own trash and retrieve new trash bags. I cleaned my own shower and room. Atrocious! The property itself isn't well-kept. The pictures are a load of false advertising. Read the other reviews and believe them. I should've. I'm not a picky person and just needed a safe place to lay me head while in Santa Barbara for a week on business. Instead of trying to save money, it would've been better to just stay elsewhere and actually enjoy myself more. The best part was the proximity of the beach and Cabrillo Blvd. Please, please, please...do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. You can thank me later!

Favorite place to stay in Santa Barbara. Despite all of the bad reviews I read, I took a risk and have no regrets. This is my third stay at Villa Rosa in two months. My room is spacious, clean and best of all steps to the pool and beach. If you are a traveler who appreciates character, Villa Rosa is a great fit. To name a few, the beautiful stained glass windows, Spanish tile and exquisite antique furniture make this property quaint, unique and special. Every staff member has been exceptionally kind going "above and beyond" to accommodate my special needs throughout my stay.

Great We stay in the same room each visit and really love the room and the atmosphere. Close to State Street and all restaurants. Over 4 years we have stayed here about 5/6 times. Summer is most fun lounging around the pool and the spa. A light breakfast is available and wine n cheese after 5pm daily
