Wells, Maine: Coastal Living in Maine's Third-Oldest Town

Founded in 1643, Wells is the third-oldest town in the state of Maine. Situated on the state's southern coast, the town sprawls outward from its bustling harbor. Visitors often walk the wetland trails of the Wells Reserve at Laudholm and hunt for treasures in more than two dozen antique shops that line nearby Route 1. Nearby, Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge stretches along 50 miles of coastline and acts as a sanctuary for migratory birds. The refuge features nature trails that wind past a variety of habitats, including estuaries, salt marshes, and boreal forest.

Wells is just south of Kennebunkport, the posh resort town notable for being a summer destination for well-heeled guests including former president George H. W. Bush. Kennebunkport's Dock Square is lined with art galleries, bookstores, and restaurants housed in classic New England clapboard buildings.

Not a good experience -dirty We stayed in unit 4E and I don’t recommend. We have been staying here for years and since Covid it’s not the same. The kitchen was missing many essential items.. tons actually. The carpet was so dirty it was turning my daughter’s knees black. The queen guest room has a broken box spring. The smoke detector keep chirping. The dryer was causing the detector to go off. No batteries in the master remote. The linen service made no sense. Put your linens in hallway and call what about trash.? Why not just check for linens in the hall at each unit? The communication of the linens was awful. The air conditioners barely worked. It was just an awful experience. Save your money a stay elsewhere at $400 a night.

Mediocre experience The place was very family friendly and very nice. Our condo unit was beautiful and cozy. I definitely liked the atmosphere of the place and the kids loved the pools. However, I do have to say we waited until the very last minute to get checked in when we arrived even though I asked a few times to try to check in a bit earlier. Other guests I had asked were able to check in earlier. Also when I asked for items and called the front desk, nobody even brought them to us. My mom had to ask one of the cleaning ladies across from our unit to give us some towels so that was frustrating because it seemed like no staff was really around or available for help or questions. When i checked out all I did was hand in my keys and the person at the desk just said all set and never asked how the stay was or greeted me. I found that a bit odd too.

Beautiful Wells Maine stay! This was our first visit to Maine and we were so happy to have found Village By The Sea. We had a road trip from the Philly area to Maine, then drove back, staying in the Boston area & Connecticut. This stay was our nicest location along the way. The condo was very spacious, modern, beautifully decorated, private and very comfortable! If we ever make our way to Maine again, we will definitely look to see if there is a room available here, as we would love to spend more time in this beautiful place!!
