Hotel at a Glance: Vision Quest Safari Bed & Breakfast

Monterey Bay is an unlikely setting for an African safari, but Vision Quest Ranch offers the closest to the real deal this side of the Atlantic. The ranch is home to the Monterey Zoological Society and provides a haven for more than 100 exotic animals. Many of them have been rescued or adopted from less than favorable circumstances but all now find comfort and safety in this new zoological property. The regulars include lions, tigers, bears, leopards, monkeys, camels, zebra, and much more.

  • Dig into a continental breakfast each morning, after which you’ll be invited to a meet and greet with one of the zoo's ambassador animals.
  • See the animals during your visit with complimentary admission to the zoo. You'll see big cats, bears, alligators, a host of smaller and unusual mammals.
  • Safari-style bungalows come with canvas walls and views of the mountains surrounding the Salinas Valley. You might even be able to hear the animals squawking and roaring in the facility. Each bungalow sleeps four guests. Your stay includes two guests with the option to pay $60 per night for each additional guest above standard occupancy.
  • Extra perk: Some animals are also walked to the bed-and-breakfast area, weather permitting, so you’ll have another chance to see them out and about.

Salinas, California: Charming Small Town near Monterey Bay

Salinas's Oldtown is a slice of historic Americana, with a charming main drag lined with coffeehouses, bakeries, and a wide range of restaurants, pubs, and shops. The National Steinbeck Center downtown pays homage to Salinas native and Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck. Exhibits include Steinbeck's personal belongings as well as private letters and notes pertaining to some of his most popular novels, such as The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden.

The Pacific coast is less than 20 miles away; there, a string of beach towns hugs the horseshoe of Monterey Bay. Spend the day shopping the upscale boutiques of Carmel-by-the-Sea or head to funky Santa Cruz to ride roller coasters along the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. You'd be remiss not to check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the world's premier aquariums. The center re-creates several ecosystems, including a kelp forest, coral reef, sandy shores, and open sea. You'll see hundreds of animals, including a variety of sharks, dolphins, whales, otters, jellyfish, and turtles.

This was not a queen bed and futon it was two beds that we just put together each time we’ve stayed here and it works out great. This was our 3rd or 4th stay here and it’s always amazing. The staff is very efficient. We miss some of the former activities that aren’t available but it doesn’t make it any less enjoyable.

Super fun experience. The animal visits are unique and the zoo is just the right size to walk around and see everything without being overwhelmed. Will definitely come back again

A slice of Africa Vision Quest Ranch is a slice of Africa! It’s a unique and memorable experience. The atmosphere is serene, the surroundings are stunning, and the connection to nature is unparalleled. The highlight of my visit was booking a personalized tour at the zoo, which I highly recommend to anyone planning a trip here. It’s the best way to learn more about the incredible animals that call this place home. The guides are knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about wildlife, which made the experience all the more engaging. If you’re looking for a unique experience that’s both fun and educational, it’s worth every penny and more!

Hidden Gem in the Salinas Foothills My family spent the night this past weekend at Vision Quest Ranch and visited the Zoo on Saturday. It was a great experience, and my children really enjoyed the Zoo and staying overnight at the Bungalow. We arrived on Saturday and toured the Zoo. It was pleasantly not crowded, and so we were able to spend time at the exhibits without feeling rushed to move on. Yes, some of the animals seem a bit crowded, but the Zoo is very clean, as are the exhibits. 90% of the animals were out and easily viewed which may the experience more enjoyable. I find it frustrating when attending zoos, and the animals are either inside, or hidden away behind obstacles. We were able to check into our Tent Bungalow in the early afternoon which was nice. No waiting until 4pm... Our Bungalow (which was the Big Cats one closest to of course the Big Cats) was spacious and enough room for 4. It was clean and with a large bathroom. A refrig with water and orange was a nice touch. You can definitely hear the Male Lions throughout the early night and early in the morning, so be aware. We did not mind, and it literally felt as if the Lions were right outside our place. The Bungalow also has a view of a large exhibit that currently has Rhinos, Zebras, Water Buffalo, and Wildebeast. In the late afternoon we choose the duo activity of feeding the Tigers and then putting the Rhino's to bed. This was the highlight of the trip, and well worth the extra expense. Being that close to the animals was very exciting for the kids and us. Also before this activity, we did have animals taken to the front of our bungalow which included a Lemur and Skunk. There is a small breakfast provided the next day which was nice. Overall the staff were friendly and engaging, and for us, well worth the experience. A definite hidden gem located in the western foothills of Salinas.

Great place! We loved this place! The bungalow was awesome and well equipped. Surprisingly we stayed warm with the space heater and heated mattress pads. Incredible to hear the lions at night and look across at the zebras and water buffalo from our deck. On our arrival day, the staff walked a few animals by the bungalows and spent a few minutes talking to us about them. We did a private tour and it was so enjoyable with the staff being friendly and engaging and the zoo was immaculate! Breakfast was a generous box filled with various pastries, fruit, and yogurt. I was very impressed! We enjoyed our stay so much and highly recommend Vision Quest!
