Motel at a Glance: Waikiki Village

“A cross between Hawaii Five-O and Mad Men.” That’s how designer Tim McLendon describes Waikiki Village’s new look on the motel’s website. The 2018 renovation harks back to the motel’s origin in 1963: decor like flowery wallpaper and molded plastic chairs adorns guest rooms, and teal and lime-green accents pop on the building’s white exterior.

  • In every room: TVs with Roku streaming, plus microwaves and mini fridges
  • More perks: The one-bedroom king suite adds a stovetop and a balcony.
  • Hangout spot: an outdoor lounge area with grills and bocce ball
  • Distance from the beach: With the motel situated directly across from the beach, guests can get to the sandy oasis in less than 120 steps.
  • What’s nearby: The motel is 1 mile from the southern end of the boardwalk and 3 miles from Market Common, home to spots including P.F. Chang’s and Anthropologie.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Sandy Beaches, Golf Courses, and Classic Amusement-Park Rides

Myrtle Beach is the crown jewel of South Carolina’s Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of white-sand beaches along the Atlantic seaboard that draws surfers, fishers, and kayakers. The city was named one of the best vacation spots in the United States for a family by USA Today, in part because of its wooden boardwalk, which stretches for more than a mile and buzzes with carnival games and amusement-park rides. Hop into the SkyWheel Ferris wheel’s gondolas, surrounded by more than a million LED lights, for a panoramic view of the city below.

Less than 20 miles south of Myrtle Beach, the tiny fishing village of Murrells Inlet provides a tranquil contrast to the boardwalk’s hustle and bustle. At Brookgreen Gardens, more than 2,000 sculptures stand amid sprawling floral gardens and massive, moss-covered oak trees that have been around for centuries. Murrells Inlet is also home to the Tom Fazio–designed TPC Myrtle Beach golf course, 1 of nearly 100 courses in the area that helped Myrtle Beach earn its title as the seaside golf capital of the world.

It would have been a 5 if we didn’t have to wait an hour for someone to check us in. The rooms were really clean, when someone was there the staff was super friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay there again if I have a chance!

A lacklustre, impersonal hotel Our room at the Waikiki Village Hotel was clean but lacking in basic amenities. There wasn't a box of tissues, blow dryer, or a full length mirror and the room wasn't tidied up each day unless we requested it to be. Two of the main overhead recessed lights were out so the room was dimly lit. Word of advice: Please pump some serious iron before reserving this room because the door probably weights 500 lbs. and needs a swift and powerful slam for it to close properly. Ice machine was broken, too. The hotel staff members, Maggie and Marlin, were extremely sweet and helpful even though it was apparent they were short staffed. They tried to accomodate our needs and we hated to keep bothering them. The office was locked and unattended and that was a major no no. Vacationers like to know that they can go to the hotel office if there is a problem. Calling a phone number just doesn't cut it. Close proximity to the beach was a plus. One street to cross and you're basically there. The pool looked lovely and there was a small hot tub as well.

Room was clean, comfy beds & great rate.Carpet severely faded & some exterior doors need a new kick plate. Not great area Cute motel. Pet friendly. Check in was easy, although had to go through airiva website, which was different. First room I checked into smelled like smoke so they moved me. Second room was exactly what I expected: clean, basic and vintage. Comfortable beds. Close to the beach. However, rooms could use a refresh. The carpet is severely faded from sun coming through the windows. But the price was excellent for a clean motel close to the beach. This area of MB isn’t my favorite. I wouldn’t feel safe here without my husband. I wouldn’t walk the beach alone after dark. Might stay here again but only if my hubs comes with.

DO NOT STAY HERE - HAZARDOUS WASTE This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. - THERE IS NO STAFF. We had to wait an hour in the cold to check in, because you have to call "the agent on duty". He didn't pick up the phone, and when he did it took him 20 minutes to arrive. - HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS OUTSIDE OUR ROOMS. Despite the hotel being almost empty we were put in a dark hallway, with barrels of chemicals DIRECTLY OUTSIDE OUR DOOR. - DIRTY LAUNDRY OUTSIDE OUR ROOMS. There was also a huge pile of dirty laundry outside our door. - WIFI NOT WORKING. One of the rooms didn't have working wifi. - NO TOILET PAPER. One of the rooms had no toiletries of any kind - no soap, no shampoo, and absolutely zero toilet paper. - NO TV REMOTE. One room had no remote and the TV was not useable. - THEY DON'T CARE. My complaints have been ignored and I have been unable to get my money back. DO NOT STAY HERE. They don't care about this property, and will just take your money.
