Wisconsin Dells: Picturesque Scenery and Family Entertainment

Before the Dells became synonymous with water parks and amusement rides, the Midwestern destination's claim to fame was its scenery. Visitors began coming in the 1850s to see the craggy rock formations that frame both sides of the Wisconsin River. These bluffs—or dells—are still visible today from the downtown area, which is rife with kitschy attractions, from mini-golf courses to go-kart tracks.

But it's safe to say that most visitors nowadays come to the water parks. In fact, the Dells area likely has more water slides per capita than any other spot on the planet. The fun doesn't stop in the cooler months, either, thanks to a slew of indoor aquatic centers, many of which are nearly as elaborate as their outdoor rivals.

This was such a good deal and we had an amazing time at Wilderness! Next time I think we might look at booking a villa to get 2 bedrooms and a kitchen but otherwise we had a great time. We went in April which I guess is off season so most of the on-site restaurants were closed.

Water slide fun One of our best family vacations we have taken. The resort is very accommodating and comfortable. Huge resort with all types of rooms and cabins. The water park on the inside of the resort has several, sections. Also has a 9,hole golf course and 18 holes course. Food available everywhere. The fun water slides are available for all ages. Little slides to huge slides. If you are brave and tall (48 inches minimum) the hurricane slide is really fast and fun, as well as the black hole . Our 9:year old grandson rode all of those and it was hard for us to keep up with him. We had more fun than I can describe. Great family resort.

Amazing Resort - Have Fun This was our 1st time to the Dells and I’m glad we chose this resort. It’s the nicest resort around with plenty to do! We stayed in a standard hotel room - 2 queens and a soda bed. I think the sofa bed was a slight upgrade and worth it! We had plenty of space for 4 of us for 4 nights. Fun Pass: Our kids are 7 & 10 and we got our moneys worth the first day! They loved the go-karts, ropes course & laser tag. Waterparks: Overall every waterpark was phenomenal with plenty to do, very clean, friendly staff. Our kids loved Wild West and we loved Klondike Cavern because The Hurricane is hands down the best slide in the park! We also loved the racers at Lost World. Staff: Every foreign employee we encountered was so kind! Much different than other places we’ve been with American teenage staff who hate working. Size: This resort is ginormous! Many days we were so thankful for the shuttles to save our feet! Bring cash to tip the drivers, we were unaware of this & felt bad we couldn’t tip. Food: Our kids enjoyed the basic concessions. I wish they had healthier options. We did like the carne asada tacos at the taco truck, but it is pricey. Area: The Dells is a very run down tired city if you venture outside of the area around the Wilderness. Lots of good offsite restaurants, but prepare to pay - they’re not cheap!

Fun waterparks, although can get pricey The complex is huge and has multiple water park areas (indoor/outdoor). My kids are in the older tween/young teen stage and overall we had a really good time with the slides and parks (although a sudden storm ended up cutting some of our fun short). We enjoyed the wave pool, lazy river and the variety of slides (some more intense than others). There is plenty to do. We found our room (two queens and a couch area) to be very comfortable and reasonably spacious for our needs. I really liked the National Parks decor in the New Frontier area where we stayed. Generally I'd say the rooms have pretty basic amenities. Nothing luxurious, but we were quite comfortable. We also enjoyed the indoor things available - we did the Northern Lights rope course and it was a pretty good experience for what we'd paid (10 per person). We've never done one before and it was a pretty interesting experience and had a good number of features. There are a lot of other things available as well if you end up with a rain day. The grounds are very nice, especially the sky bridge over the "canyon" area. A few caveats: AVOID the the pushy time share people who will try to give you a coupon book and get you to come to their presentation in exchange for a voucher. Just don't do it. Parking is INSANE even as a guest. We had to leave for something in the middle of the day and drove around for about 20 minutes trying to find a spot when we got back. They really need to limit the non-guests at the park. Take my advice, don't leave in the middle of the day! Because the hot tubs are indoor/outdoor (very nice), they close due to inclement weather, which was very disappointing as that's the main thing I like to do at a water park. We ended up mostly avoiding the restaurants (aside from one of the snack areas). For the most part they seemed basic and pricey. Bring your own food/snacks/lunch things to keep in the room, and check out the other great restaurants in the area for dinner. We did enjoy the swim up bar but the drinks were a bit pricey for what you got, and my drink definitely tasted like it had a lot of cheap artificial flavoring in it. (Exception: Fields Steakhouse IS quite nice if you want a fancier meal out. We didn't go on this trip, but we've been there before.)
