Bend, Oregon: Year-Round Adventure in Cascade Range Mountains

Although gray skies loom over most of the Pacific Northwest, Bend averages 300 days of sun per year. Because of its warm, dry climate, high-desert terrain pervades the area in the form of thick juniper trees, arid winds, and snowcapped mountains. Imposing Mt. Bachelor tempts skiers and snowboarders with more than 70 powder-covered slopes. Summer activities abound at spots such as Smith Rock State Park, whose many easy day hikes provide beautiful vistas of deep river canyons inhabited by golden eagles, mule deer, and river otters. A five-minute drive southwest leads travelers to the Deschutes River, home to both smooth waters and churning Class III rapids. Whitewater rafters barrel along with the current as mountain bikers traverse miles of hilly trails lining the river's banks.

In downtown Bend, travelers find a cluster of restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. With outdoor tables and hanging pots of purple begonias dotting every street corner, the area has the feel of a quaint East Coast hamlet. Instead of chain restaurants and big-box stores, visitors find one-of-a-kind nooks, including nine local microbreweries. Among the best of these is Deschutes Brewery, which has earned acclaim from both beer-festival judges and local sippers (read our interview with Deschutes brewmasters). The award-winning Obsidian stout encompasses notes of chocolate, espresso, roasted malt, and black barley. A passion for beer pervades the city; it's not unusual to catch sight of the Cycle Pub, a mobile keg on wheels propelled by up to 14 customers pedaling through the downtown streets.

Visit Bend! Stay Someplace Else! We originally booked The Inn of the 7th Mountain because of the price, kitchen, and other amenities like mini golf, tennis and a pool. After checking in, we were directed to a “concierge.” This turned out to be the start of a sales pitch for their timeshare. They force you to pay $40 and only give you a refund if you show up at a directed time to listen to their 90 minute presentation. We were very turned off by the sales pitch and thought it was sneaky. When we pulled down the comforter, we found stains on the sheets. (The bed also felt pretty old.) Thankfully, there was a Murphy bed with extra sheets we could use. The soaps/shampoos in the bathroom were attached to the wall in the shower , but there was only conditioner, no soap or shampoo. We were so turned off by the lobby staff, we didn’t want to ask for replacements. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes, snd the tennis courts and fitness room were nice. We were so turned off by the deceptive check-in process turned into sales pitch, we’ll stay someplace else next time in Bend.

Watermark Seventh Mountain Bend Nice at 1st glance. Very friendly staff at reception. Didn’t know we were going to be pitched a timeshare. We graciously declined. Every staff member we met had only been here 3 weeks or less. The room we are in 613 smells like cigarettes. I let the team know we didn’t want to be charged for smoking. The lower adult pool is now closed. We now share the pool with several children. This is fine but not what we had planned. The bar food has been good. Again, all staff super friendly. I believe the property is going through a transformation but it wasn’t clear upon reception what was the long term goal. The property is clean, well maintained and visually appealing. More to follow….

This is the worst resort to stay at in Central Oregon Wes was awesome, very friendly and welcoming. The guy at the timeshare presentation that checked me in was rude, inappropriate and very cold. My wife woke up sick and could attend the presentation. I have attended these for years. He said if she cant get out of bed then we will keep your $40. I asked if I could attend due to her illness or reschedule and he said no and did not believe me after being an owner since 1999. I then went to guest services at the resort and they did not care either and said it was my problem. Great on you guys to have no compassion for someone who becomes ill, and thanks for keeping the $40 of my that's classy. That's the way to get people to buy more credits, treat them like trash. Well the room had hair all around the shower and toilet as well. The room had touch up paint on the walls that did not match. The furniture was worn and dated. Eagle Crest is amazing in comparison, do yourselves a favor and avoid this resort. We have been to almost all of the properties over the past 20 plus years and have never experienced this.

Worldmark owners, we share your pain Arrived at 4 and 25 minutes later still didn’t have a key. Had to go through the VIP gauntlet. This is where I met Wes, who insisted we needed to update our account, and when he started to ask what time we wanted to come back the next day ignored repeatedly that we were not going to come for an “update”. Wes followed me to my car to ask my wife when we would come in. Gave us a card that had an appointment for 8:30am the next day. We’re going golfing. I hope no one is waiting for us.

Anniversary at Seventh Mountain. The setting among the trees so relaxing. And having a beautiful hiking trail along the Descutes River literally within walking distance of your front door is just one of the bonuses of Seventh Mountain.
