Durango, Colorado: Railroad Town near Skiing and Ancient Cliff Dwellings

Durango’s history is intertwined with that of the locomotive—the town was established by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway to service the gold and silver mines in the San Juan Mountains. One of the same steam trains that ran 130 years ago is still in operation today; you can ride it through breathtaking mountain scenery from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum.

Otherwise, recreation in Durango revolves around the great outdoors. In winter, people head to Purgatory Resort to whiz down 85 downhill ski runs. Mesa Verde National Park is worth making the 35-mile trek from Durango in the warmer months. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains some of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the world. They were built by the Ancestral Pueblo people as long ago as AD 600.

Family vacation Family vacation, Great trip, nice area and amenities. Beautiful hiking and pleasant town. Very close to everything the town had to offer.

Great Location & Very Accommodating Staff! Walking distance to downtown and the Durango/ Silverton train station. Close to shops and restaurants. Construction of two hotels across the street has resulted in the timeshare charging an extra $12.00 per day parking fee, unless you are a Club Wyndham owner. Units are small, but very nice. However, this trip, (We have stayed here 4 times) the carpet was worn and dirty in the living/ dining, kitchen area, which is quite compact. It needs to be replaced! Unit has all you need in the way of kitchen supplies, except that it would have been nice to have place settings of dishes for 6 instead of four. as we cooked a lot and kept having to wash the dishes each day. Ask front desk for more dishwashing tabs as only 2 were supplied. The bed was soi comfortable with a pillowtop, and the vanity and sink are separated by a door from the toilet and huge shower, which even had a bench ti sit on if needed. Note! Kitchen area is NOT separated from the living area Sofa is across from the kitchen counterm sink, and stove.

Convenient location This resort is very conveniently located in downtown Durango near the train depot. Sounds of the trains are audible inside the resort but are not disturbing. The units are small, with very limited counterspace, but the kitchen is equipped well enough for a couple to cook small meals. Sound proofing between rooms -- both adjacent and above -- could be better. Staff are friendly. We are likely to return.

Excellent stay at Durango. Staff was friendly and helpful. Offered recommendations of things to do in town. Room was clean and comfortable. Kitchen was well equipped with all that we needed. Location was fantastic. Very walkable!

Quiet and great location. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Check in and checkout were easy. The room was clean, the bathroom was clean, and all equipment was is working order. Fee parking for guests. Great location with easy walking distance through downtown Durango.
