Norfolk, Virginia: The US Navy's Walkable Waterfront City

Virginia’s second-largest city lies in the southeastern corner of the state, right where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Elizabeth River. Norfolk’s coastline has always played an important role in the life of the city—it's home to the largest naval base in the world, and cruises often dock here, unloading streams of visitors into downtown shops, restaurants, and galleries. To see Norfolk properly, take a walk along the riverfront and board a harbor cruise, nodding along the way to the USS Wisconsin, one of the largest battleships ever built by the US Navy.

Norfolk’s cultural offerings include the Virginia Opera, a glass-fronted theater that hosts top-notch musical productions, as well as the MacArthur Memorial, which commemorates the life of famed general Douglas MacArthur. The city is also home to the Norfolk Botanical Garden, where gardens teem with life throughout all four seasons. If a day on the sand sounds more your speed, the family-friendly resort city of Virginia Beach is a short drive away.

Broken Elevators The elevator was broken the entire trip and I was on the 8th floor. Very inconvenient, especially while traveling for a job interview. The staff was kind and gave us free breakfast vouchers, but that honestly was not worth the difficulty of traveling up the stairs. This was by far the most inexpensive hotel, so canceling the reservation was not a feasible option.

Hotel needs a refresh badly. While the staff members were friendly and as helpful as they could be, the fact that the elevators were out for our entire visit, and the fact that our keycard quit working twice during our stay made the whole trip more work than it should have been. Being a month shy of 70 years old, having to go up 6 flights of stairs pretty much ruined the trip.

Comfortable Enough, But Be Prepared for Major Inconveniences I recently stayed at the Wyndham Garden Inn in downtown Norfolk, VA, and while the hotel has some redeeming qualities, there were several serious issues that made the experience frustrating. First and foremost, all four elevators were down during my stay, and I was housed on the 9th floor. Not only is this a major inconvenience, but I wasn’t informed of the elevator situation until check-in — by which time, I had no other lodging options. For a hotel of this size, that’s unacceptable. Additionally, housekeeping never came during my three-day stay — no room cleaning, no fresh towels, nothing. When you’re climbing nine flights multiple times a day, a clean room and fresh towels would at least help offset the exhaustion. The hotel is also under construction, which adds to the overall sense of disarray. Again, no heads-up on that before arrival. That said, there were some positives: the showers had great water pressure and stayed hot, and the room itself was reasonably comfortable. It’s a bit light on amenities for the business traveler — don’t expect much beyond the basics — but the location is decent, and the bed was fine. In the end, my stay was “fine,” but had I known about the elevator issues and lack of housekeeping, I likely would have looked elsewhere. If you're considering staying here, call ahead and ask about construction and elevator status.
