Newport, Rhode Island: Harbor Town with World-Famous Mansions

Newport sits on Rhode Island’s Aquidneck Island, just 30 miles south of Providence and 70 miles south of Boston. With its picturesque cliffs running along the rocky coast, Newport understandably attracted America’s upper class at the turn of the 20th century. The prestigious Astor and Vanderbilt families joined other captains of industry in building their summer “cottages” here—sprawling estates that epitomized the Gilded Age’s glitz and glamour. You can sign up for mansion tours at the historic The Elms, Marble House, and The Breakers, a 70-room Italian Renaissance–style palazzo commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1893 and inspired by the palaces of Genoa and Turin.

Year-round, the Cliff Walk is one of the most popular activities in town. From sunrise to sunset, you’ll find visitors strolling the 3.5-mile path, ensconced between the beautiful Newport shoreline and the spectacular mansions. If the conditions are ripe, you might see surfers catching waves on the ocean breakers. The ocean is easily accessible from Newport’s western, eastern, and southern coastlines. It’s often referred to as “the Sailing Capital of the World,” and in the summertime, fishing boats fill its harbors and beachgoers flock to its shores.

DO NOT BOOK HERE! NEVER EVER book here! It is a lie. We booked our summer vacation to Newport in January. All good reviews, had a pool for the kids & right in the center of Newport. We got nervous over the last month after reading scathing reviews. I called the resort and Airbnb to make sure everything was in order. We live 6 hours away. I even called the day before arrival. We closed our business for the week to get away, which which we have never done before. . We drove up early as check in is at 4 and we wanted to get alittle in before check in. They called at 2 to say there was a pipe burst and water main break by our unit. This is what they say to every bad review I’ve read. They offered us a place 40 miles away. That is not what we booked and would never have. We thankfully found another place for only 2 nights that was in an attic on our own. I have chronic back issues and the stairs were very hard to do as they were twisted. I had to have help. Still we were thankful as to not turn around and go home for our kids we’re so excited. We had to pay again out of pocket as there return policy is 15 days. They book places they do not have or will. I do not want this stressful event for anyone else trying to have a nice relaxing time with your family or friends. I am contacting Visa, the Better business bureau & have already told abnb to take them off the list. I have never had an issue with Airbnb but they were not very helpful at all. And this happens a lot. Shame on you. Fool me once my bad, fool me twice, they should know better.

BEWARE - Do not book here as this is a scam hotel, it is timesharing, not a hotel We booked a 2 bedroom suite at The Club Wyndham Newport Onshore. Approximately 3 hours before we left for the hotel, I received an email from them canceling our stay. I called the hotel directly and the man who answered the phone was very rude, he told me our 2 bedroom had been canceled as this is a timesharing place and the time sharers get top priority, they could send us to their sister resort upon arrival. Their sister resort was in Jamestown and the suite we would receive would be a 1 bedroom suite with a pull-out sofa at same price and they only had one room available, it was also first come-first serve. I told him this should not be legal as we had booked and paid for this 2 bedroom suite in Newport (not Jamestown) and he told me to call Booking.com to get a refund and that is how it is whether I like it or not. The man who answers the phone at Club Wyndham Newport Onshore is extremely rude. I did call Booking.com to get my full refund and booked with another hotel. Never again with this hotel? I am giving everyone warning! DO NOT BOOK HERE!

Third party always overbooks and cancels reservation with no notice. All the reviews about booking this hotel with Extra Holidays is true. They will cancel your reservation without notice. We booked at the Newport Onshore and when we went to check in they said our recreation was cancelled and they needed to relocate us. This was just 2 hours before check in! They first tried to rebook us at a standard hote 20 minutes away when we booked a two bedroom condo with a kitchen. Only after the great staff at the hotel found us another accommodation at their sister location on the wharf did they put us there. This took almost 3 hours and the new accommodations still did not have a balcony and the pool was under construction. So disappointed in Wyndham for allowing this third party to overbook rooms and not notify people in advance. I will say all the staff on both properties were apologetic and special thanks to Vanessa at Newport Onshore for going above and beyond. But this is not how you do business and this would never happen at Marriott. Be warned. What you book is not what you get. I will never book a Wyndham property again until they fix their booking.

Bait and Switch Alert Save yourself some stress and book at a non-Wyndham. They are running a bait and switch scam. In the short time we were there, we heard from merchants and Onshore staff that at least 17 reservations had been cancelled without proper notice. There are reviews on various travel sites and even Wyndham’s site of people detailing their experiences with this bait and switch scam. It works like this: You make a reservation 7+ months in advance, plan your vacation, confirm reservation the day before and on the day of, or upon arrival, they cancel due to overbooking. When you try to hold them accountable, they claim you booked with a 3rd party even though you booked through the Wyndham app and have the email confirmation. They argue and claim you booked through Holidays Res, which you didn’t, but a call to Wyndham results in them telling you they don’t have your reservation even though you have their email confirmation. Holidays Res tries to low ball you into a room that doesn’t work for you and is no where near Onshore or most of the main Newport area and they get away with it because most people need a roof over their head for the night. You can refuse their low ball offers and go home or find other accommodations and be refunded in full, but if you stay at another Wyndham there’s no refund. They do this because Wyndham offers to rent out the timeshare units so they can make extra money. We got canceled because a time share owner has first rights and can call up same day to reserve a room. We reported them to our credit card company for running a scam and disputed the charge. If a credit card company finds a merchant is defrauding card users then they could lose their rights to accept those types of credit cards, like Mastercard, Amex, Discover, and Visa. Lost revenue will result in a positive behavior change by Wyndham. We received a full refund from Holidays, but it doesn’t cover the loss of the vacation, loss of sleep and induced stress all because they haphazardly want to make a buck that is ultimately a scam. No one was rude and every last one freely and easily admitted this bait and switch scam is a common, long-standing, occurrence. They refer to it as a cancellation though. They all agreed it wasn’t right, but since they were limited in what they could do they didn’t let it bother them. They just work there.

You’ve been warned They cancelled my reservations a few hrs before we were due to check in that I didn’t see since we were traveling to Newport. We were told the time share owner decided he wanted the room for the weekend. I guess they can just make those decisions at anytime. Upon arrival when we found out the room was cancelled they tried to get us a room in other locations such as in Jamestown or on Goat Island but none had the accommodations I had booked to get 2 bedrooms and full kitchen. That was non negotiable. After almost 3 hrs at the front desk which was about to close up for the night they suddenly found a room in the same bldg that a time share owner had decided not to use for the weekend. But this was only for 2 nights, not the 3 nights we initially booked to stay. Looking at other reviews this has happened over and over. Wyndham claims to have no control over it but I booked directly thru the Wyndham site so as far as I’m concerned this is on them. Although we ended up getting 2 nights at the condo, the aggravation of it just isn’t worth going thru them again. It’s too bad because the condo was nice but it’s not worth the risk of this happening again.
