Ouray, Colorado: Former Mining Town amid San Juan Mountains

The former gold- and silver-mining town of Ouray sits at an elevation of 7,760 feet in southwestern Colorado. Surrounded by craggy, red-hued mountains on three sides, the town’s Victorian homes, converted saloons, and other 19th-century buildings dot a valley floor that still looks something like the set of an old western. Ouray’s location in the mountains keeps it pretty isolated—though not quite as isolated as it was when Butch Cassidy hid out here after robbing a bank for the first time in nearby Telluride.

Today, many visitors explore the wilderness via four-wheelers and hiking trails, including those found at Box Canyon Waterfall & Park. With suspension bridges, wildflower meadows, rare birds, and the 285-foot Box Canyon Waterfall, the park is filled with postcard-worthy scenery. In the winter, daredevils make their way to the Ouray Ice Park to climb dozens of frozen waterfalls, ranging from 80 to 200 feet in height, along the Uncompahgre Gorge. Less adventurous types might prefer a relaxing soak in Ouray’s famed hot springs.
