Milton, Wisconsin: A Stop on the Underground Railroad
From the outside, the Milton House Museum is most notable for its broad white walls and hexagonal structure, which has stood in the same spot in town since 1844. However, this National Historic Landmark—originally designed as a stagecoach inn by Joseph Goodrich—is best known for what lies beneath it. An abolitionist, Goodrich helped hide slaves traveling on the Underground Railroad in the basement of the inn. An intact escape tunnel still stands here, one of few such tunnels open to the public. Milton’s history also manifests in other ways, with many of its antique shops, apartments, and municipal offices housed in the original buildings that once made up Milton College, Wisconsin’s first coed liberal-arts college.
