Sports-and-Adventure Camp for a Summer Weekend Getaway
At Club Getaway, you’ll find a giant water trampoline floating on a mountain lake, rows of rustic log cabins, grills sizzling on the beach, and volleyball and tennis courts. Every day, guests here enjoy daily sports, hikes, and nightly campfires with s'mores. It feels like kids’ summer camp, and that’s partly the idea—except that Club Getaway is a camp geared toward adults. There are grownup activities such as wine and beer tastings, ziplining, and late-night dance parties.
On any day at Club Getaway, you can choose from an array of outdoor pursuits, from biking to rock climbing to water-skiing. You can also go mountain climbing in the nearby Berkshire mountains or take a book and read by the lake. With the summer sports-and-adventure package, you get sunglasses and a fleece jacket to help you stay comfortable on sunny days and cool nights.
Chefs from the Connecticut Culinary Institute serve up hot and cold breakfast buffets and outdoor lunchtime barbecues. Afterward, culinary professionals coordinate cooking classes for guests and lead wine tastings where they can find out which varietals pair best with certain entrees. Dinners are served family style at tables of eight with unlimited wine, followed by live entertainment and dancing chaperoned by local Eagle Scouts.
The Boathouse Club morphs into a full-fledged nightclub at night, with DJs spinning tunes till the morning. Outside, late-night campfires are the places to wind down and socialize, complete with guitar music and s’mores.
Kent, Connecticut: Old-fashioned Shops and Maple Syrup in the Berkshires
Kent lies close to Connecticut's western border, in the picturesque highlands known as the Berkshires. The natural setting makes the town an ideal spot for outdoor adventure. At Kent Falls State Park, you can hike through trails lined with trees and bedrock walls. Keep a camera handy for when you reach the falls, which rush down a 250-foot rock face to create postcard-worthy images.
Daily life in Kent is refreshingly subdued. Founded in the late 18th century, the small town is made up of several smaller hamlets and two covered bridges that span the Housatonic River. Downtown, you can sample fresh maple syrup in springtime and visit art galleries, quaint teahouses, and old-fashioned apothecary shops.
