Pennsylvania’s biggest tourist attraction isn’t a city or a monument – it’s the Poconos, a scenic tract of peaks in the northeastern part of the state. About 85 miles from New York City, the Poconos have been a vacation destination since the early 20th century, when Philadelphia Quakers opened summer resorts in the area. Since then, seven state parks and one national recreation area, Delaware Water Gap, draw millions of visitors every year. Delaware Gap has plunging waterfalls and stretches of rapids for kayakers, along with hundreds of miles of hiking trails, including 27 miles of the famous Appalachian Trail.

Quaint historical villages dot the Poconos area. In Cresco, a small town minutes from the Crescent Lodge, the Cresco Station Museum, housed in the old rail station where city dwellers used to pour off trains for weekend getaways, documents the Poconos' early days as a resort area.
