Explore Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef

Picturesque beaches, bustling cities, and the Great Barrier Reef are Australia’s calling card. Experience all three on this vacation with stays in Sydney and Cairns, departure point for the Great Barrier Reef and the world’s oldest surviving rainforest. You’ll have plenty of time to explore both areas, and you can see the Reef up close with a snorkeling cruise. This vacation includes:

  • Roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles (LAX)
  • Domestic Australian flights between Sydney and Cairns
  • 4 nights in Sydney at the Cambridge Hotel
  • 4 nights in Cairns at the Mercure Cairns Harbourside
  • Daily breakfast
  • WiFi
  • Tour of the Sydney Opera House
  • Great Barrier Reef Cruise with snorkeling
  • Return SIC airport transfers in both Sydney and Cairns
  • US/foreign taxes & fees, including security fee
  • Applicable airline fuel surcharges

Days 1–2: Flight to Sydney

  • Flight time: about 14.5 hours from Los Angeles; you’ll cross the international date line

Days 3–6: Sydney

As one Travel + Leisure writer put it, Sydney is “impressively cosmopolitan, almost embarrassingly handsome—but as breezy and casual as any sunsoaked harbor town.” Sydney Harbor lights up nightly at the Harbour Bridge and white-sailed Sydney Opera House, located in Circular Quay. This area also contains some of Sydney’s best restaurants and attractions, including the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Museum of Contemporary Art, which features paintings, sculptures, and installations from international and Australian artists. Grab a drink at the clubs and bars of Oxford Street and Kings Cross, or head to the more bohemian King Street, where you can get authentic Thai curry.

  • Best view of Sydney: The Sydney Tower Eye’s observation deck offers 360-degree views of the Blue Mountains, the harbor, and numerous beaches.
  • Neighborhood spotlight: The Rocks neighborhood was the site of Australia’s first European settlement. Today, it’s home to many galleries, shops, and theaters.
  • Work on your tan at one of Sydney’s 70 beaches.
  • Accommodations: The historical Cambridge Hotel features stylish rooms and such amenities as a pool and a critically acclaimed restaurant. It’s nestled in Surry Hills, an artistic district flush with galleries, boutiques, wine bars, and restaurants.

Days 7–10: Cairns

Cairns is the only place in the world with two side-by-side World-Heritage sites: the Wet Tropics Rainforest (the oldest surviving tropical rainforest) and the Great Barrier Reef. See for yourself with a six-hour tour of Upolu Cay and the Great Barrier Reef, which includes lunch, adventure drift snorkeling with a marine naturalist, and a glass-bottom boat tour.

Cairns offers many cultural attractions as well: The Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, for example, celebrates the living history of Australia’s indigenous people, offering tours and dance performances.

  • The Esplanade: Located in the heart of Cairns, this lengthy stretch of shore offers parks, barbecues, playgrounds, and a skate park. Adjacent to this is the Lagoon, a large saltwater swimming lagoon that lights up at night.
  • The Reef Hotel Casino: Test your luck at the roulette, baccarat, and blackjack tables here; the casino is also home to several restaurants and bars, including the nightclub and piano bar Velvet Underground.
  • Dose of adrenaline: Try bungee jumping and white-water rafting.
  • Accommodations: Just steps from the beach, the waterfront Mercure Cairns Harbourside offers comfortable accommodations, a restaurant, and wine bar.
  • Fun facts: The Wet Tropics Rainforest is home to half of Australia’s many plants and animals; the Great Barrier Reef is almost as diverse; thousands of fish, turtle, and sea-snake species live within its technicolor corals, which can stretch more than 1,400 miles.

Day 11: Return to the U.S.
