Days 1–2: Fly to Sydney
- Flight time: about 14.5 hours from Los Angeles
Days 3–6: Sydney
You’ll land in Sydney on day 3, after crossing the International Date Line. With sunny weather nearly year-round, it’s a city best experienced outside: sail across Sydney Harbour, stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens, or take a surfing lesson on the famed waves of Bondi Beach. If you like to shop, look no further than Paddington Markets, an open-air bazaar where more than 150 vendors sell art, clothing, and crafts every Saturday.
- Historical Rocks District: The Rocks has been dubbed “Sydney’s Outdoor Museum” for its wealth of historical and cultural attractions. The neighborhood’s Museum of Contemporary Art showcases quirky and modernistic works by such artists as Andy Warhol and Stephen Birch.
- Exotic wildlife: The Taronga Zoo houses some of Australia’s native animals, including kangaroos, platypuses, dingoes, and bilbies—small desert-dwelling marsupials. Guests can even get up close and pat a koala.
- Take a day trip through the famed Blue Mountains
- Accommodations The four-star Cambridge Hotel features an Italian restaurant and wine bar, as well as spacious rooms decked out in clean, modern decor. It’s located in Surry Hills, an artsy neighborhood with local restaurants, gastropubs, and boutiques.
Days 7–11: Cairns and Return to the United States
Next up is Cairns, where you can travel to the Great Barrier Reef, though the reef isn’t Cairns’s only UNESCO World Heritage site. There’s also the Wet Tropics, the world’s oldest surviving rainforest. Here, you can see volcanic lakes and waterfalls while hiking through the lush, green vegetation. You’ll fly back to the United States on day 11.
- Cairns Esplanade has a vast manmade lagoon whose shallow waters belly up to the playgrounds, parks, and barbecue grills lining the shore.
- Skyrail Rainforest Cableway: This gondola ride takes you high above the rainforest’s treetops, where you can enjoy bird’s-eye views of Cairns and Trinity Bay.
- Cheap eats: A bevy of food stalls and eateries lines the Esplanade’s swimming lagoon. Grab pizza, ice cream, or fish and chips.
- Test your luck on the roulette, baccarat, and blackjack tables at Reef Hotel Casino; the casino also houses several restaurants.
- Accommodations: Relax in your room at the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, explore the 5-acre gardens, or enjoy a drink at the pool’s swim-up bar. This award-winning hotel is within walking distance of the Esplanade, Night Markets (an open-air shopping destination), and the Reef Casino.
