Auckland, Days 1–7:
The first leg of the trip includes accommodations at the 4-star Mercure Auckland. A half-day Auckland city tour visits scenic Mount Eden and the trendy Parnell Village, where historical buildings have been transformed into boutique shops.
Dozens of harbors and bays border the northern city of Auckland, often called the "City of Sails” for having the world’s highest number of boats per capita. One of the best ways to see Auckland is by taking a cruise on Waitemata Harbor. You can also visit the observation deck of the Auckland Sky Tower to get a 360-degree view of the city from more than 1,000 feet in the air.
Queenstown, Days 8–11:
In Queenstown, you'll stay at the Rydges Lakeland Resort. A full-day luxury-coach tour includes a visit to Fiordland National Park to see Milford Sound, a spectacular fjord Rudyard Kipling called “the eighth wonder of the world,” and a boat cruise to see the Mitre Peak rock walls and waterfalls.
Known as the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown plays host to a number of year-round outdoor activities, including skiing and snowboarding, whitewater rafting, and scenic cruises along Lake Wakatipu. Located on New Zealand’s South Island, the city also contains dozens of wineries that offer tours and tastings of the region’s famous pinot noir.
Optional Rotorua Extension, Days 12–14:
Accommodations are included at Sudima Lake Rotorua hotel, as well as a flight between Auckland and Rotorua. Also included is a full-day tour of the Hobbiton movie set and farm, which heads across Lake Rotorua into the rolling green hills of "the Shire,” where parts of the Lord of the Rings films were shot, and a Tamaki Maori cultural evening that includes a hangi dinner.
Rotorua has some of the highest levels of geothermal activity in the world—the city is rife with geysers, steaming mud pools, and thermal springs. Pay a visit to Te Puia, a geothermal valley a few minutes outside the city, to see the Pohutu Geyser erupt up to 100 feet high. The region is also home to several large volcanoes, including Mount Tarawera. The best ways to tour the volcano are by helicopter, a four-wheel-drive vehicle, or mountain bike.
