Squamish, British Columbia: Alpine Adventures in "Sea to Sky Country"
The region between Vancouver and Whistler is often called "Sea to Sky Country" because of the juxtaposition of ocean tributaries and mountain peaks. The Sea to Sky Highway traces the coastline from Horseshoe Bay, just west of Vancouver, up to the municipality of Squamish. Along the way, you pass waterfalls, lakes, and the Stawamus Chief, one of the largest granite monoliths in the world.
Warm summer temperatures are a boon for anglers, who can find salmon and dolly varden char in the four rivers around the resort—Mamquam, Cheakamus, Squamish, and Elaho. If you'd rather be on the water, head to the Squamish Spit at the top of the Squamish River, where wind gusts create conditions ideal for windsurfing. Back on dry land, there are miles of mountain-bike trails in close range of the hotel.
