Hotel at a Glance: Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth
Since opening in 1958 in downtown Montreal, the stately Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth has played host to numerous dignitaries and celebrities, including Nelson Mandela, Joan Crawford, Jimmy Carter, and, yes, Queen Elizabeth II. The most famous stay, however, took place in 1969, when John Lennon and Yoko Ono camped out for 7 days in suite 1742 as part of their “bed-in” for peace. Once you check in, you might not want to leave either.
- Downtown location: You’ll be steps from transit stops, the Bell Centre (home of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team and numerous concerts), McGill University, and scores of shops and restaurants.
- Luxury accommodations: Guest rooms feature Le Labo Rose 31 bath products and high-definition TVs with pay-per-view movies.
- Le Montréalais Bistrot-Bar serves Mediterranean dishes made with juicy grilled meats and fresh fish.
- Sip a martini and sample canapes to live piano accompaniment in Les Voyageurs lounge.
- Cakes, pastries, and chocolate truffles are sold at Boutique Gourmandise.
- Accolades: The hotel has won several awards for dining and eco-friendly measures.
Montreal, Quebec: Canada’s French-Speaking Cultural Capital
Cobbled streets, historic architecture, and horse-drawn carriages are common throughout Montreal, Canada’s second-largest city and one of the oldest European settlements in North America. It was founded by the French in 1642, and 2 million people speak French here as an official language.
A good first stop for visitors is the Bonsecours Market, a domed plaza where local merchants have been peddling their wares for more than 100 years. As you browse the area, check out the elaborate Notre-Dame Basilica, one of the city’s most famous churches. It was built in the Gothic Revival style, and it houses a fascinating crypt filled with archaeological treasures.
Montreal is renowned for its music and arts scenes. One of the best places to see a show is the Place des Arts, a huge complex of theaters and concert halls that occupies a whole block downtown. Opera, ballet, symphony, and jazz shows fill most of the Place des Arts’ calendar, but there’s the occasional rock band or standup comedy show as well.
