Romantic Guest Rooms and Tea Socials at Historical Countryside Estate
In 2010, Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast was named the most romantic inn in the Mid-Atlantic by readers of Karen Brown's travel guides. Based on appearance alone, it's easy to see why. The colonial estate—originally built between 1825 and 1837—is situated on 5 acres in the Brandywine Valley, a region famous for its historical mansions and lush countryside. Rooms at the inn feature private decks that look out to the meadow, gardens, and pond.
Beyond the inn’s quaint façade, though, its keepers take extra steps to maintain the romantic feel. Every afternoon, the inn hosts a tea social, during which you can sample treats baked by innkeeper Rick Carro. For an additional charge, you can grab after-dinner desserts—such as chocolate truffle torte with key-lime caramel sauce—and take them back to your room.
Every morning, Rick also acts as chef to prepare three gourmet breakfast options. Omelets are made with vegetables from the estate gardens, sausages are smoked in-house with applewood or mesquite, and Rick takes special pride in his scrambled eggs, which are described as "among the finest you will ever have."
The inn’s rooms are scattered amid a whitewashed Carriage House and the Springhouse, which was built atop the foundation of the original estate barn. Carriage House room 3 features a four-poster canopy bed, a seasonal fireplace, and a shaded deck. Springhouse room 1 has its own private entrance.
The Brandywine Valley: Cultural and Historical Countryside
Located in the southeast corner of Pennsylvania, the Brandywine Valley is covered with rolling hills and bubbling streams. During the early 20th century, wealthy families began building extravagant estates here, many of which have been converted into modern-day museums. One such property—the Longwood Gardens—is located 3 miles from the inn. This 1,077-acre estate, once the private estate of the illustrious DuPont family, features 20 indoor and outdoor gardens, an extensive fountain system, and a rent-controlled Orchid House. The DuPont’s legacy also extends to the Hagley Museum, the Winterthur Estate and Gardens, and the Nemours Mansion & Gardens.
Five miles from Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast, the Brandywine River Museum showcases the legacy of another notable family: the Wyeths. N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth were all influential visual artists in their time, and you can admire the work of all three generations in this restored mill-house museum.

About Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast
It’s easy to see why readers of the travel-guide series Karen Brown’s Guides voted Fairville Inn Bed & Breakfast the Most Romantic Inn in the Mid-Atlantic in 2010. For starters, the inn—originally built circa 1825–1837 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places—hasn’t lost any of its Old-World charm. Queen Anne–style reproductions such as white-draped canopy beds are found throughout the property. In the Main House, guests can gather on the porch or in front of the living room’s fireplace to socialize. You can even take afternoon tea out on a shaded patio next to the original summer kitchen and root cellar. The 5-acre grounds also feature manicured gardens and an innkeepers’ quarters.
Located in the heart of the Brandywine Valley, Fairville Inn is close to many local attractions. From this point, visitors are fewer than 10 minutes away from the stunning horticultural displays at Longwood Gardens and the antique-laden Winterthur Museum. You can also tour many local wineries that are clustered along the Brandwine Valley wine trail.
