Educational Tour of Cuba
While Cuba lies just 90 miles from American soil, travel to the island nation has been all but impossible for US citizens since 1960, due to the US embargo. But all that’s changing under the People to People program authorized by the US government. Under this program, US citizens can legally travel to Cuba for educational exchange purposes that involve art, music, and culture. Travelers will be required to adhere to Friendly Planet Travel’s full itinerary. The tour includes:
- Non-stop round-trip flights from Miami (MIA) via U.S. Government-licensed charter service
- 1 night of standard accommodations at the Crowne Plaza Miami Hotel
- 4 nights of standard accommodations at the Hotel Nacional in Havana

Day 1: Miami
- Check in to the Crowne Plaza Miami Hotel: Complimentary hotel shuttles run every 20 minutes from the airport’s second-floor departure terminals.
- An introductory briefing will be held at 7:30 p.m. so that you can get to know your fellow passengers and go over your travel documents.
Days 2–3: Havana, Cuba
- Nonstop flight to Havana: 1 hour
- Stroll the cobblestone streets of Old Havana and stop at the used booksellers’ market, where you’ll find independent booksellers hawking popular Cuban literature.
- Learn more about Cuban culture: Engage in a discussion with an English-speaking Cuban expert on the history of U.S./Cuban relations in the 20th & 21st centuries.
- Local stops: Visit a primary school, a few local artists and enjoy musical performances at every turn.
Day 4: Alamar and Cojimar, Cuba
- Soviet-style concrete apartment blocks make up the bulk of Alamar, a district on the outskirts of Havana. While you’re here, visit community gardens (organopónicos) in which residents grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
- Stop for lunch at a paladar in the fishing village of Cojimar, the setting of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, and visit Finca Vigia, once the home of Hemingway.
- Tour a local art center that teaches children to create art from discarded materials, and then try your hand at creating a sculpture. The leader, Lazaro, has received national recognition for the project.
Day 5: Las Terrazas, Cuba
- This rural farming community was founded in 1959 to help farmers collectively overcome monetary, educational, and medical hardships. Visit the community’s clinic, which is shared by traditional and nontraditional medical practitioners, a dentist, and a hairdresser.
- Local eats: Visit a local cafe to discuss coffee culture in Cuba over a steaming cup of Cuban coffee, then enjoy a country-style lunch at a nearby farmhouse.
- Stop at Fusterlandia: Straight out of the mind of José Fuster, an artist often called the “Picasso of the Caribbean,” this neighborhood is awash with colorful sculptures and mosaics.
- UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: Las Terrazas is now part of UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve, much of it reforested coffee plantation. The day completes with a farewell dinner and salsa dancing to a live Cuban band.
Day 6: Havana, Cuba
- Centro Pro Danza de Cuba: This dance school teaches ballet to children regardless of age, talent, or, ability to pay. Take a tour, watch a rehearsal, and then discuss dance opportunities in Cuba versus the US with the instructors.
- Nonstop flight to Miami: 1 hour
