This deal includes nightly accommodations and roundtrip airfare from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York City via Brussels Airlines. Below you’ll find a brief summary of trip highlights.
Days 1–4: Nairobi City Tour and Lake Naivasha Boat Safari
After spending Day 1 in the air and arriving in Kenya on Day 2, the tour kicks off on Day 3 with a visit to Langata Giraffe Center, where you’ll get up close and personal as you feed Rothschild’s giraffes, an endangered species. You might even spot a warthog or two while on the property. You will also visit the Karen Blixen Museum, the former home of the Out of Africa author, and the Kazuri Bead Factory, where handmade beads are made by the women of Nairobi’s surrounding villages. The next day, you’ll stop at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant orphans’ nursery, where workers nurture orphaned elephants and rhinoceros back to health before releasing them into Tsavo National Park.
Afterward, the tour heads northwest for a boat safari on Lake Naivasha, Kenya’s second-largest freshwater lake. Keep an eye out for the more than 100 types of waterfowl that live around this volcanic crater lake, along with hippos, zebras, and buffalo.
Days 5–8: Masai Mara Game Reserve
Frommer’s calls the massive Masai Mara Game Reserve “an iconic African wilderness.” Each July, more than one million wildebeests, gazelles, and zebras migrate from the Serengeti Plain in nearby Tanzania to the Masai Mara Game Reserve (the animals migrate back in October).
You’ll embark on three game drives at Masai Mara, putting you in the center of the action. There’s a good chance you’ll spot Africa’s famous Big Five: wild leopards, lions, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos. At 580 square miles, the reserve is also home to nearly 100 species of mammals and some 500 types of birds. On Day 7, a hotel room will be available to use for the day, and in the evening you will enjoy a farewell dinner at the famous Carnivore Restaurant. On Day 8, you’ll fly back to America.
Optional excursions: Spend an afternoon in a Masai village ($25 per person) or swamp a morning game drive for a hot-air balloon ride over the plains ($450 per person)
