Day 1: En route from the United States

You’ll spend Day 1 flying from Los Angeles, Houston, or New York to Beijing.

Days 2–6: Beijing

Beijing’s imperial past is ever present: you can hardly walk a block without seeing ornate temples, ancient alleyways lined with shops and teahouses (called hútòng), and open-air markets that have been around for centuries. At the center stands the Forbidden City, which served as a royal residence to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. And of course, there’s the Great Wall, which winds its way across the northern part of Beijing.

  • Must-see attraction: Temple of Heaven, a 20-minute taxi ride from your hotel
  • Tiananmen Square dates back to the 15th century. It extends over nearly 100 acres, making it the biggest public square on the planet. Among the highlights are Chairman Mao’s mausoleum and the Monument to the People’s Heroes, a 120-foot granite obelisk commemorating fallen Chinese soldiers.
  • Optional tours: See the Great Wall and Ming dynasty tombs with lunch (8.5 hours; $57/person) or enjoy a Peking duck dinner (3.5 hours; $32/person). Guests may also choose a full day, Forbidden City and Summer Palace tour, or a full day Temple of Heaven and Hutong tour, both of which include lunch.

Days 7–10: Shanghai and Return to United States

Shiny and new is the theme in downtown Shanghai. The city harbors hundreds of soaring skyscrapers, including the world’s second-tallest building, the 1,600-foot Shanghai World Financial Center. Nicknamed the bottle opener because of a rectangular opening at the top, the building towers over the Pudong district and exemplifies the hypermodernity of Shanghai. In its midst, though, there’s quite a bit of history. The Bund, once a major financial district in the early 20th century, is lined with Gothic, Baroque, and Classical buildings.

  • Flight time from Beijing: approximately 2 hours
  • World-class shopping can be found on Nanjing Road, which contains high-end retail stores as well as smaller shops selling silk, calligraphy, and traditional Chinese medicines. Go at night, when it’s all lit up.
  • Optional tours: acrobatics show with dinner (3.5 hours; $29/person) and a full-day tour of a nearby water town, Suzhou, with lunch (9.5 hours; $47/person). Guests may also visit the zoo and Olympic site, or a full day tour of the Yu Yuan Garden and Jade Buddha; both of which include lunch.
  • Return to the United States: You’ll spend the final day on your return flight.
