Day 1: Flight to Bogota
The flight from Miami takes approximately 3 hours. After checking into your hotel, you’ll enjoy dinner and an orientation with your tour manager.
Day 2: Bogota
Day 2 begins with breakfast at your hotel. Next, you’ll take a guided tour of Bogota that includes a stroll through the Plaza de Bolivar, a visit to a pair of museums, a coffee break, and a game of tejo, Colombia’s national sport. You’ll also get to experience Bogota after dark.
- Old Spanish buildings with hidden interior gardens line the streets of Bogota’s colonial district, known as La Candelaria. The cathedral here, first constructed in 1539, houses important religious artifacts.
- Botero Museum: Works of Picasso, Renoir, Monet, and Matisse hang side-by-side with original sculptures and paintings by Colombian artist Fernando Botero.
- The Gold Museum is Bogota’s most famous museum. It contains more than 55,000 pieces of gold along with informative, bilingual descriptions of how the precious metal was used in pre-Hispanic cultures.
- Try your hand at tejo: You’ll get a chance to throw a tejo disk at a target that explodes if you hit it just right.
- Optional tour: Ride a train up Monserrate mountain to get a gorgeous view of the city ($39/person). The tour lasts approximately two hours.
- Pubs and restaurants in the Zona Rosa provide a taste of Bogota’s nightlife.
Day 3: Cartagena
In the morning, you’ll be taken to the airport for a flight to Cartagena, which takes just over an hour. The splendid old city was once a stronghold for both Spanish conquerors and pirates of the Caribbean. Your guide will lead a walking tour to see the coastal city’s many wonders.
- The Walled City: Ancient walls and fortresses were originally constructed to keep pirates at bay. Today, the area is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Browse handcrafted goods at The Vaults, a former prison site within the Walled City that now serves as a marketplace for local artisans.
- Colonial architecture is prevalent in Cartagena; you’ll also see republican and Italian-style structures, such as the bell tower of the Cathedral of Cartagena.
- San Felipe castle: This fortress was built on San Lazaro Hill to defend the city from pirate attacks.
Day 4: Cartagena
You’ll have this whole day to explore Cartagena at your leisure. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can join an excursion to La Boquilla mangrove in the morning or to Totumo Mud Volcano in the afternoon.
- La Boquilla: Hop in a canoe to explore the mangrove that abuts this fishing village. It’s a change of pace from the city, with a secluded feel and an extra abundance of wildlife, including pelicans, iguanas, and crabs. This tour ($65/person) lasts about three hours.
- Totumo Mud Volcano: Hike up to a crater in this volcano, where you’ll see sulphur, magnesium, or other therapeutic elements bubbling up. You can float in the mud to absorb its restorative properties before dipping into a nearby freshwater lake to rinse off. This tour ($65/person) lasts approximately four hours.
Day 5: Return to Miami
After breakfast, you’ll be transported to the airport for your flight back to Miami. The flight takes a little less than 3 hours.
