Days 1–3: Flight and Venice

After an overnight flight, you’ll arrive in Venice on day 2. The scenically soggy city has been a favorite with travelers for generations. Writers and painters have been especially drawn to its waterlogged beauty, but maybe that’s no big surprise. A marble city with liquid streets is bound to appeal to anyone with an artistic temperament, a flair for romance, and a soft spot for the impossible.

  • Venice city tour: Among other sites, you’ll visit the island of Murano and Doge’s Palace, a 14th-century Venetian Gothic icon that today serves as a museum celebrating Venice’s history and culture (day 3).
  • Optional tour: Glide along Venice’s canals in a gondola as music plays (day 3; additional fee).

Days 4–6: Pisa, Florence, and Assisi

Tuscany is known for its undulating hills, sprawling vineyards, and sun-kissed villas. The largest city in the region, Florence, is also one of Italy’s most beautiful. A city tour on day 5 lets you stroll across the Ponte Vecchio and admire David in the Galleria dell’Accademia. In your free time, wind down with a bottle of vino on the steps of the Piazzale Michelangelo—the best spot to watch the sun set over the Arno River.

  • En route to Florence: Sample wine and local cuisine at a Tuscan farm, then snap a photo of the Leaning Tower of Pisa (day 4).
  • Tour of Assisi: This medieval town’s most impressive feature is the 13th-century Basilica di San Francesco, which is adorned with outstanding frescoes by Giotto (day 6).
  • Optional tours: For an additional fee, you can take a guided tour of Florence’s Uffizi Gallery (day 5) or enjoy a Tuscan dinner in a hillside restaurant (day 5).

Days 7 and 8: Rome and Departure

As you walk through the streets of Rome during a city tour on day 7, you’ll see ancient wonders and modern shops in a span of minutes. Cars and Vespas zip past the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, and ultrachic boutiques peddle fashions from some of the top designers in the world.

  • Vatican City: See Michelangelo’s frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and marvel at the architecture of St. Peter’s Basilica.
  • Optional tour: Savor a four-course dinner with unlimited wine and take a ride around Rome’s famous landmarks (day 7; additional fee).
