Days 1–3: Flight and Venice

The scenically soggy city of Venice has been a favorite with travelers for generations. Writers and painters have been especially drawn to its waterlogged beauty, but maybe that’s no big surprise. A marble city with liquid streets is bound to appeal to anyone with an artistic temperament, a flair for romance, and a soft spot for the impossible.

  • Included sightseeing: After enjoying a free day to explore the city on day 2, you’ll take a walking tour on day 3, which includes a boat ride to the Island of Murano, where you’ll see a live glass blowing demonstration. On the rest of the tour, you will view some of the floating city’s most popular sites, including St. Mark’s Square, Doge’s Palace, and the San Marco Bridge.
  • Peggy Guggenheim Collection: Works by Jackson Pollock and Salvador Dalí make it one of the foremost contemporary art museums in the world.
  • Optional excursion: a romantic gondola ride with music on day 3 ($44 per person)

Days 4–5: Florence

Tuscany is known for its undulating hills, sprawling vineyards, and sun-kissed villas. The largest city in the region, Florence, is also one of Italy’s most beautiful. Stroll across the Ponte Vecchio, admire David in the Galleria dell’Accademia, and wind down with a bottle of vino on the steps of the Piazzale Michelangelo—the best spot to watch the sun set over the Arno River.

  • Included sightseeing: On day 5, get to know the city on a walking tour that visits famous statues and architectural gems, including the towering Duomo.
  • Worth the climb: The view of Florence and the Tuscan countryside from the top of Giotto’s bell tower Optional excursion: Entrance to the Accademia Gallery, home to one of the most famous of all sculptures, Michelangelo’s David ($38 per person)

Days 6–9: Rome and Departure

Walk through the streets of Rome and you’ll see ancient wonders and modern shops in a span of minutes. Cars and Vespas zip past the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, while ultra chic boutiques peddle fashions from some of the top designers in the world.

  • Palatino: This hill is believed to be the place where Rome was founded in 753 BC. You can tour the imperial palace and stroll amid pine trees surrounding ruins of bathhouses and marble fountains.
  • Vatican City Tour: See Michelangelo’s frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and marvel at the architecture of St. Peter’s Basilica.
  • Optional excursion: Tour of Ancient Rome, which houses the famed Colosseum, Arch of Constantine, and the Roman Forum ($40 per person)
