Days 1–3: Frankfurt

  • Stroll through medieval Romerplatz: Many of the buildings surrounding Frankfurt’s central square date back to the 14th century.
  • See the red sandstone ruins of Heidelberg Castle, a Gothic masterpiece dating back to the 12th century. The town is also home to the oldest university in Germany: the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg.

Day 4: Cologne

  • Take a cruise on the Rhine River: Along the way you’ll pass charming villages with timber-framed houses and the Lorelei, a granite rock that is said to harbor a bewitching siren.
  • A walking tour of Cologne takes you to the 13th-century Cologne Cathedral and its ornate twin spires, among other historical sites in the 2,000-year-old city.

Day 5: Hamburg

  • Wander the manicured walkways of Alster Lake: The man-made lake sits right in the middle of the city and is surrounded by sumptuous villas.
  • Relax amid fountains and gardens in Planten un Blomen Park. On summer evenings, the park hosts half-hour water light shows with music.

Days 6–7: Berlin

  • A sightseeing tour through East and West Berlin takes you past Brandenburg Gate, the country’s symbol of reunification, as well as the Reichstag Building and the State Opera House.
  • Go shopping in the big department stores and designer boutiques along Kurfürstendamm, one of Berlin’s busiest streets. Blend in by calling it Ku’damm for short.
  • Optional excursions: an evening tour of Berlin with dinner ($79 per person), a historical tour of Berlin ($47 per person), and a tour of Potsdam, the “City of Palaces” ($75 per person)

Day 8: Dresden

  • “Florence on the Elbe”: Dresden is known for its Baroque artwork and architecture; its most famous examples are Zwinger Palace and Frauenkirche Church.
  • Marvel at jewels worn by Saxon kings at the Green Vault, which holds treasures made of gold, silver, gemstones, ivory, mother-of-pearl, and ostrich eggs.

Day 9: Nuremberg

  • The birthplace of composer Richard Wagner has marvelous Baroque and Rococo architecture.
  • View the imposing Palace of Justice, where the Nuremberg trials took place after WWII.

Days 10–12: Munich

  • Watch the Rathaus-Glockenspiel: Forty-three bells and life-size figurines depicting vignettes from Bavarian history adorn this century-old clock and tower in Marienplatz.
  • Tour Nymphenburg Palace: Inside, you’ll find royal portraits and elaborate frescoes. Outside, swans glide on placid lakes and statues dot beautifully landscaped gardens.
  • Optional excursions: a traditional Bavarian dinner ($82 per person) and a full-day tour of the fairy-tale-like Neuschwanstein Castle and the town of Oberammergau ($76 per person)
