Days 1: Flight

Days 2–4: Rome, Italy

Rome is known as the Eternal City—a title that nicely encapsulates its ancient history and perpetual energy. Here, cars and Vespas clog the streets, running adjacent to ancient ruins. Must-sees include the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the epicenter of ancient Rome. On Day 3, you can take part in an optional side tour of Vatican City to see the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica ($73/person), or take a tour of Ancient Rome ($64/person). Venture to Naples and Pompeii for some additional sightseeing on Day 4 ($133–$135/person), or take a half-day sightseeing tour of Athens ($70/person).

  • The Capitoline Museums are filled with historic sculptures and busts of ancient public figures. The most memorable is a statue of Constantine that’s almost 40 feet tall.
  • Masterpieces by Raphael and Rubens adorn the walls of Galleria Borghese, which is tucked amid the fragrant public gardens of Villa Borghese.
  • Eat like a local: Sample a slice of pizza bianca at a local trattoria, or try coda alla vaccinara (a stew made of tender slow-roasted oxtail).

Days 5–7: Athens, Greece

Known as the cradle of western civilization, Athens contains a wealth of historic and intellectual attractions. Though many of the most popular sites, such as the Acropolis, are in ruins, there’s still a modern feel to many of the local museums and galleries. You can take an optional tour including the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum on Day 6 ($61/person), and visit Delphi on Day 7 ($90/person).

  • Climb to the top of Mount Lycabettus to watch the sun set against the backdrop of Athens’s ancient ruins.
  • Tower of the Winds: This tall marble building was the GPS of the 1st century. Astronomers used it for orientation and to tell time.
  • Eat like a local: According to Condé Nast Traveler, you’ve got to have a Greek salad—known as “horiatiki” to locals—while you’re in Athens. You can hold the lettuce; the salad is piled high with tomatoes, onions, and a big chunk of feta, all drizzled in olive oil.
