The nation’s capital, San José, sits in the heart of the country in a lush upland basin surrounded by mountains. Its central location makes it a good base for exploring Costa Rica’s jungles and volcanoes, though there’s plenty to do in the city as well. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum is a highlight, showcasing an impressive collection of artifacts that include a life-size statue of a cacique, or chieftain. You can also see a collection of old coins in the neighboring Numismatic Museum.

Day 1: Fly to Costa Rica, where you’ll spend the day at leisure
- Day 2: Travel along the shores of the Caribbean coast to Tortuguero
- Day 3: In the morning go on a guided hike through trails in the nearby rainforest; in the afternoon admire the natural beauty of wildlife during a boat trip
- Day 4: Return to San Jose, where you’ll explore Gold Museum and the Costa Rica Art Museum
- Day 5: Travel to Arenal, with a short stop in Sarchi, an artisan town
