Bangkok

A city of more than 8 million (plus another 6 million living in the surrounding metropolitan area), Bangkok dwarfs other Thai cities. Tuk-tuks (auto rickshaws) zip along its winding streets, and houseboats and shops float along the canals. But alongside the palaces and signs of traditional Thai life, modernity has emerged in the form of air-conditioned megamalls and futuristic skyscrapers.

  • Grand Palace: This architectural masterpiece, constructed in 1782, housed Thai kings for nearly 150 years. Topped with golden spires, the complex sprawls across more than 2.3 million square feet.
  • Golden Buddha: This towering, 5-ton solid-gold statue was hidden beneath a coat of plaster until the mid-1950s; now at Wat Traimit temple, it’s estimated to be some 800 years old.
  • Pak Khlong Talat: a marketplace where baskets overflow with rare orchids, lotuses, and fragrant marigolds, which are considered lucky charms in Thailand
  • Optional tours: Chao Phraya River cruise with dinner (day 3; $77–$81/person), tour of city and temples (day 4; $42–$47/person), dinner and cultural show at Siam Niramit restaurant (day 4; $65–$69/person), dinner and cabaret show (day 5; $59/person), Grand Palace tour (day 5; $45–$50/person), tour of Ayutthaya with cruise (day 6; $69–$73/person), and tour of Damnoen Saduak floating market (day 7; $69–$74/person)

Phuket

Thailand’s largest island is home to pristine white-sand beaches, which get a dash of the extraordinary from the imposing rock formations that surround some of them. But there’s more to Phuket than just sun and sand—it’s also a melting pot of Thai, Chinese, and Malaysian cultures.

  • Fresh, local seafood: Try The Old Fisherman (located at your hotel), where you can dine on Thai and international specialties in an open-air dining room.
  • Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park: Hike through dense mangrove swamps and past crashing waterfalls, or ride a motorbike down unspoiled beaches. Macaques and flying lemurs are among the animal inhabitants.
  • Phi Phi Islands: The limestone cliffs and pristine beaches on these islands southeast of Phuket were featured in the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach.
