Ideas for Your Vacation
You can see two of Europe’s most energetic cities during this 8-day vacation. Quirky and cosmopolitan, Barcelona starts the trip off and offers a contrast to the more traditional Madrid. Two architectural styles dominate the city—the medieval look that defines the Gothic Quarter, and the whimsical Art Nouveau buildings designed by the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí. You’ll then travel to Italy’s capital city of Rome. Walk through the streets and you’ll see ancient wonders and modern shops in a span of minutes. Rome is a city of contrasts—where Vespa scooters whiz past ancient ruins, and photo-snapping tourists share picturesque plazas with impossibly chic fashionistas sporting designs from top Italian designers.
- Palace of Catalan Music: Built during the height of Catalan modernisme, this opulent concert hall overflows with ornamentation, including lifelike sculptures that seem to step straight from the walls. During the day, the stained-glass skylight provides breathtaking natural light to the main hall.
- Park Güell: Architect Antoni Gaudí’s creation features whimsical buildings and sculptures trimmed with mosaics.
- Picasso Museum: The collection includes more than 4,000 of the artist’s works, including the series based on Velázquez’s Las Meninas.
- Must-see attraction: There’s nothing quite like Gaudí’s masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia, a cathedral more than 130 years in the making (it’s scheduled to be finished in 2026).
- Head to the Vatican City to see the Sistine Chapel—where Michelangelo painted his famous frescoes—or St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome’s most-visited cathedral.
- Eat like a local: Rome’s quintessential street food is trapizzino, a baked-bread pocket filled with cheese, meat, and veggies.
- Saint Peter’s Basilica is easy to spot in Rome’s skyline—it’s one of the largest churches on the planet.
- Worth the climb: Conquer the nearly 140 Spanish Steps for a great view of the Piazza di Spagna and its 17th-century baroque fountain below.
