York, Pennsylvania: Farmers’ Market and Craft Beers in Historic Colonial Town

While walking around downtown York, don’t be surprised if you cross paths with a soldier dressed in full Revolutionary War regalia. Costumed performers are just one example of how the town stays close to its historic roots, which date back to 1741. York even had a stint as the capital of the United States: the Second Continental Congress convened here for nine months during the Revolution. Along the town’s cobblestone streets, several brick buildings have been emblazoned with colorful murals depicting important events in American history.

York’s sprawling Central Market has been operating since just after the Civil War. It’s still the place to go to browse crafts, hear live music, and pick up locally grown fruits and vegetables. Many downtown restaurants use produce from the market to craft their menus. For dessert, you can nibble on a famous York Peppermint Pattie or munch on Belgian-style chocolate fresh off the conveyer belt at the Latimer Street Bakery. Flavorful beers are also on hand—head to Holy Hound Taproom or Liquid Hero Brewery to sample the ever-changing selections on tap.
