Days 1 and 2: Athens
There’s more to Athens than its ruins—thanks to its vibrant nightlife, tropical weather, and modern museums, Athens has remained a world-class travel destination well into modern times. Still, the ruins are the city’s greatest draw. See how ancient Greeks lived and worshiped at the Acropolis’s monuments and temples, among them the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike.
- Plaka, the city’s oldest neighborhood, is set at the base of the hill where the Acropolis stands. Its pedestrian-friendly streets are packed with cafés and shops.
- Acropolis Museum: Along with thousands of ancient artifacts, it features glass floors that let visitors see the archaeological site beneath the building.
- Live like a local by getting your caffeine fix from an icy frappé or a steaming cup of strong Greek coffee.
Days 3 and 4: Mykonos
As your ferry approaches the Mediterranean island of Mykonos, you’ll be mesmerized by the landscape. Villages and churches cling to sheer cliffs, and 16th-century windmills dot the waterfront. The island is perhaps best known for its legendary party scene—drinking and dancing starts on beaches in the late morning and continues in nightclubs until sunrise.
- Photo op: Head up to the island’s famous 16th-century windmills and watch the sun set over the glittering sea.
- Hit the beach: Clothing-optional Paradise Beach is known for its rowdy parties; for a more laid-back day on the sand, try Psarou.
- Little Venice: Grab a seat at one of this waterfront neighborhood’s tavernas to watch the waves roll in while you nibble mezedes, or small plates.
Days 5–7: Santorini
Santorini got its ruddy, rugged landscape from an earth-shattering volcanic eruption more than 3,500 years ago. Some even speculate that Santorini was the site of the Lost City of Atlantis. But there’s no speculation as to why the island is a bucket-list travel destination for people the globe over—it is eye-poppingly gorgeous, with whitewashed homes perched on the side of craggy hilltops.
- Red Beach: This narrow stretch of coastline gets its name and Mars-like hue from the volcanic rocks surrounding it.
- Visit local wineries: You can tour vineyards before sampling the vintages, such as the famous vin santo sweet wine.
- Take a hike along the caldera from Fira to Oia. The roughly three-hour trek rewards travelers with great views of the sea and charming villages.
Days 8 and 9: Departure
You’ll cruise back to Athens on the evening of day 7. Your flight to the United States will depart on day 8, and you’ll arrive on day 9.
