Days 1 and 2: Flight and Bogotá
After a flight from the United States, you’ll land in Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. The majestic peaks of the Andes mountains loom in the skyline here. Though there are plenty of skyscrapers, the city center, known as La Candelaria, is marked by cobblestone streets and centuries-old churches. A half-day city tour will help you get acquainted.
- Bolívar Square contains a statue of Simón Bolívar, who helped establish Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia as sovereign nations.
- La Catedral Primada: This Roman Catholic cathedral is the largest in Colombia and among the most beautiful in South America. It’s at the east end of Bolívar Square, the historic city center.
- Watch a game of tejo: The national sport of Colombia involves throwing metal disks into a wooden frame with the goal of hitting one of the small explosive targets inside. When the targets are hit, they set off a sound like a fire cracker.
- Visit the Gold Museum: The most famous museum in the city houses more than 55,000 (mostly gold) artifacts from Colombia’s pre-Hispanic cultures.
- Where you’ll stay: The four-star Hotel Morrison 114 opened on Bogotá’s posh north side in 2012. It offers complimentary WiFi and breakfast.
Days 3–5: Cartagena and Departure
On day 3, you’ll board a flight to Cartagena, Colombia’s party city. This port city’s location on the Caribbean Sea made it an attractive landing point for Spanish conquerors as well as pirates centuries ago. One of its most famous landmarks is Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a fortress dating back to the 16th century that was never breached by invaders.
- El Centro is a lively neighborhood where salsa music swells from brightly painted bars and restaurants and locals sell watermelons and papayas along the streets.
- Las Bóvedas: Once used as dungeon cells, these 18th-century vaults are now filled with boutiques and other attractions. You can browse handcrafted souvenirs or sip cocktails at an open-air restaurant.
- La Popa Monastery: This convent sits on the highest point in Cartagena, offering sweeping views of the city. Your trip includes admission and transportation to the site.
- What to drink: Limonada de coco—lemonade infused with coconut milk. It’s a Cartagena classic.
- Where you’ll stay: Hotel Capilla del Mar is in Cartagena’s ritzy Bocagrande neighborhood. The hotel has free WiFi and a rooftop pool with views of the skyline and the sea.
