7-Day Vacation to London and Edinburgh
You’ll split your time between two of the United Kingdom’s capital cities: London and Edinburgh. There’s no day-to-day itinerary for this vacation, so you can spend your days visiting Scotland’s castles and trying to make the Beefeaters at Buckingham Palace laugh (they won’t), or just vegging out in your four-star accommodations. We’ve suggested some of our favorite landmarks below. This vacation includes:
- Round-trip economy-class airfare from New York (JFK) or Chicago (ORD)
- 3 nights’ standard accommodations at the four-star Kensington Close Hotel in London
- 2 nights’ standard accommodations at the four-star Macdonald Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh
- Daily breakfast
- Standard economy-class rail ticket from London (Kings Cross Station) to Edinburgh (Waverly Station)
London, England
England’s 2,000-year-old capital city brims with famous landmarks: Westminster Abbey, the site of royal weddings since 1100 AD; the crosswalk where the Beatles traversed Abbey Road; and Kensington Palace, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reside. After a day of sightseeing, check out the theaters of the West End and the dazzling billboards in Piccadilly Circus.
- Tate Modern was built as a power station in the mid-20th century and now displays works by Salvador Dalí and Jackson Pollock.
- Bird’s-eye view of Big Ben: Board the London Eye Ferris wheel to see the city and the River Thames from inside a glass-walled pod. The view is best at night, when the city is all lit up.
- Eat like a local: London is known for its pubs (there are roughly 7,000), where you can pair a pint with the go-to fish and chips. If you have a more adventurous palate, pop into a curry house or dip sourdough bread into the savory drippings of a candle made from beef fat.
Edinburgh, Scotland
You’ll travel by train from London to Edinburgh, a city rife with history and contemporary culture. Modern-day Edinburgh has an increasingly youthful vibe—it features some of the best nightlife in Scotland, as well as the University of Edinburgh. But the city isn’t too far removed from its long-and-storied past. Old Town is filled with reminders of yesteryear, including cobblestone streets, narrow alleyways dating back to medieval times, and ornate churches. Edinburgh Castle, situated at the western edge of Old Town, is worth a visit. The imposing stone fortress houses national museums and the Scottish Crown Jewels.
- Holyrood Park: From your hotel, it’s just a five-minute walk down the Royal Mile. Stroll amid the park’s lochs and hike up to the summit of Arthur’s Seat—an extinct volcano that offers views of Edinburgh from 800 feet.
- Royal Botanic Garden blooms with fragrant rosebushes and rare orchids and features fossilized trees that are millions of years old. Guided tours are available year round.
- Eat like a local: Edinburgh’s foodies hang out on West Bow Street, where you can fill up on haggis (Scotland’s national dish), pheasant and mash, or Tabasco-spiced oysters and smoked salmon.
