Days 1–3: Oslo

Norway’s capital city Oslo sits at the head of the Oslofjord, a waterway that appears in the background of The Scream, the most famous painting by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. He created a few different versions of the painting, which is also among the most famous paintings in the world. You can see one of them at the Munch Museum and another at the National Gallery, both in Oslo’s city center.

  • Where you’ll stay: Thon Opera Hotel, which has free WiFi and views of the Oslofjord
  • Get your bearings: You’ll take a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing tour on Day 3.
  • The Viking Ship Museum contains three Viking funeral ships dating from the 9th century that were discovered in the Oslofjord between 1867 and 1904.
  • Visit the Norsk Folkemuseum: an open air museum with 155 traditional houses and an 800 year old church.
  • Vigeland Park: Here, you’ll see more than 200 of Gustav Vigeland’s works, including the famous Monolith sculpture, which features 121 carefully carved figures clambering to reach the top.

Days 4–6: Balestrand

On the morning of Day 4, you’ll board a train to Flåm. Spend the day exploring this scenic village before stepping onto the boat that will take you across the Sognefjorden to Balestrand, a quiet town “feels real and lived-in,” according to Rick Steves.

  • Where you’ll stay: The Kviknes Hotel. This large waterfront property, a Balestrand icon, is loaded with eye-catching art and antiques, and is one of the largest wooden buildings in Norway.
  • Natural splendor: You’ll be right along Sognefjorden, the longest fjord in the world.
  • See local marine life at the Sognefjord Aquarium, a 5-minute walk from the hotel.
  • Optional excursion: On Day 5, you can take a side trip to Fjærland, where you’ll cruise between steep mountains and get an up-close look at the largest glacier in Europe ($150/person).
  • Balestrand food: Take the time to enjoy an authentic smorgasbord for dinner.

Days 7–8: Bergen

You’ll wake up on Day 7 in Bergen, having departed Balestrand the previous evening. Frommer’s calls Bergen “Europe’s most underrated city.” Thanks to the town’s northern latitude, the summer sun shines well into the evening, adding daylight to the nightlife and casting a beautiful glow onto the mountains and fjords that envelop Norway’s second-largest city.

  • Scenic locale: Bergen sits along the waterfront in the middle of a region known as the Seven Mountains. Take a stroll along the harbor to see the city’s traditional Norwegian architecture.
  • Take a sightseeing tour on Day 7. Your guide will take you to a fish market and lead you along the narrow lanes of Bryggen, a colorful historic district that was once a trading hub for all of Scandinavia.
  • Where you’ll stay: Scandic Neptun Hotel, which offers free WiFi and is a short walk from Bryggen, the Old Wharf Town.
  • Flight home: On Day 8, have breakfast and spend the morning at your leisure before making your way to the airport for your flight back to New York.
